Johnny Depp is playing Tonto? Really? Is there a need to have The Lone Ranger return to the big screen (or any screen)?

I'm curious to see that. Besides I'm sure someone uttered something similar when RDJ was cast for Sherlock Holmes, "do we need more Holmes".

These are characters that are ingrained in our pop culture and will always be around.

I don't find Sherlock Holmes, for the most part, to be offensive. What does a movie which features a crusading and noble white lead with his dutiful, barely literate American Indian-stereotype side-kick have to offer today? Of course, with Johnny Depp in the role, I suppose that will have to be significantly revised, but I'm not thrilled about the whole thing. Maybe he'll make it work--maybe.

It would be funny and not too out of character if Jack randomly started singing in the next movie.

In the trailer for the next movie in my head, at one point Jack starts singing the Billy Joel song "Captain Jack."

Captain Jack is gonna get you high tonight
And take you to your special island

Now that we've seen absolute proof that Johnny has a good set of pipes, I'd love to see Jack do a few more ditties in PotC.

While Sweeney Todd demonstrated that he & Helena Bonham Carter can carry a tune, neither of them had the kind of belting abilities needed to pull off Sweeney Todd, ruining an otherwise fine musical adaptation.

The producers wanted to do at least two sequels and doing them back to back like the Matrix sequels was the best way to do it. If they did them apart it would have been years between the movies and Disney wanted to strike while the iron was hot.

They could have filmed them back to back and still have them be standalone adventures.

The writers were having hard time with writing one big story split into two movies. Having to write two stories for two movies seperately would have been been impossible for them considering the tight schedule they were on. During production they were actually shooting parts of the third movie without having completed the script for the third movie. It's a miracle the third movie makes as much sense as it does.

They were probably hopng to leave the second movie with a cliffhanger to get people to check out the third movie. It worked out for the most part since the third movie ended up being a direct sequel to one of the biggest movies of all time intead of just another adventure.

I suppose they could always use Will as a cameo appearance at some point. Either way, I'm intrigued about the idea of a new approach for the next Pirates film. Should be fun.

I wouldn't mind a cameo, if it meant Captain Turner of the Flying Dutchman was showing up to deliver my beloved Norrington back to the land of the living...

I thought Norrington's character, in Curse of the Black Pearl was absolutely fantastic -- as in, he was the epitome of the selfless hero. They really took his character too far before giving him his redemptive moment in World's End. A cameo from him definitely could work, especially if it played on the original incarnation of his character.

Well geez you didn't mention you had a societary and racial issue with the concept. You just questioned why more LR&Tonto.

Now that I know your bias it clears up your problem for me.

Personally I don't see it that way so I can't help you with your bias.
I see the property as being outfitted to fit the universe he exists.
He was a Texas Ranger in the days of the Old West. For better or worse those jobs were held by white men, just the way it was. Indians were known to have conflicting relationships with settlers and those they encountered. So, not totally odd Tonto would strike up a friendship of some manner.

You choose to see oppression and mocking where I see two people of different backgrounds coming together for a common cause. You see a type of abusive slave/master relations and I see two people working as imporant cogs with equal purpose towards justice on the frontier.
