Why not better nods to other Star Trek shows

It would seem that there were only 4 recognizeable aliens in this movie, every other alien was just made up for this movie.

They could have easily have had Denobulans, Xindi, Betazoid, Cardassians, Breen, and many others either as characters or just background extras.

And instead of the accident reference of the death of a 120 year old Beagle, there could have been an old T'Pol or ancient Mayweather or something...

YOU ARE SO RIGHT!!! WHERE WERE THE:

ANDORIANS, TELLARITES AND SOME OF THE TMP ALIENS?!

And instead of the accident reference of the death of a 120 year old Beagle, there could have been an old T'Pol or ancient Mayweather or something...

I guess they wanted to throw in a "cute" reference that non-fans would laugh at even if they didn't have a clue who this "Archer" fellow was, because this is a big popcorn summer movie and they care about mass-appeal more than pleasing the real fans, sadly.

Groan. Can we please retire this refrain that "real" fans don't like the new movie--and that it's somehow a bad thing to make the movie accessible to people who haven't seen every single episode of every single series?

The Porthos thing is exactly how nods like that should be handled. It's an easter egg for long-time fans, but it doesn't leave the average viewer scratching their heads. It works even if you don't get the reference, which is just what a good writer should aspire to. You want to kill two birds with one beagle!

Not this shit again.

was i the only person who thought it odd that an ORION be in Starfleet? I know you guys love her, but did it strike anyone else as odd?

Maybe instead of Orion staying neutral ("Journey to Babel"), the effects of Nero's sudden appearance in the 23rd century caused Orion to join the UFP and put some cadets into Starfleet?

A few more "classic" aliens wouldn't have hurt though. I can agree with you there. Plenty of time to work them in though.

I'd like to see the Ithenites("gold midgets")from TOS and mentioned in ENT make a return in somewhat better and more alien-looking makeup. Daniels on ENT mentioned at least once that the Ithenites were an integral, valued race in the Federation so it wouldn't hurt to see them one more time.

I agree it would have been nice to see a couple Andorians, Tellarites, & Denobulans. Plus, when I watch the beginning of the bar scene, I find myself wishing that the long faced alien sitting between Kirk & Uhura had been from the same race as Morn.:( (Heck, considering we don't actually know how long his race lives, it could have been Morn himself!)

I don't think it was a 120 year old Porthos. I think it's more likely that Admiral Archer ordered Dr. Phlox to clone Porthos in some rediculously unethical medical procedure, kinda like what happened to Sim.

Yeah, the Porthos mentioned in TREK XI wasn't the one from the show. Couldn't have been, unless Archer put him in a suspended animation kennel for decades...which I could not see our hero doing to his beloved pooch. They were almost inseparable, after all.

or it may have been that one parent was human and she was raised by humans.

Or one of Portho's decendants.
