Do You Generally Believe Posters on the BBS?

Speaking of changing user names, I've never tried it before. I know during Halloween or around the holidays, T'Bonz offers to have posters' names changed temporarily. For example, one year my Halloween name was Dementor and for Christmas I went by 12DronesofXMas or something like that.

I guess I wasn't very original or creative when I picked Drone36929. I tried to think of a name that was at least Trek-related or had something to do with my personal interests at the time. Given the opportunity, though I doubt it would really make a huge difference, I'd change my user name to either Gryffindorian, which is pretty much the handle I use for Myspace and other sites.

I did change usernames for a while, a couple of years back. I was spending too much time online, and it was affecting my work, so I asked the powers that be to lock my account.

Several months later, I had the problem under control, so I re-registered under a new username.

Then, after a while, I checked my old account, out of curiosity, and discovered that it had never been locked. So I re-adopted it.

Oddly, nobody connected me with the second username, except someone in the fanfic forum who asked why I was posting stories to someone else's series.

Which secondary username did you use, if you don't mind my asking? I used to read (and even write) fan fic and visit the FF Forum (way back when RevdKathy was still the mod).

I believe what people say that is about themselves. Why not? Sure people might be lying, but it has no impact on me. No reason to get suspicious over what someone says about themselves.

If it is about things in general (about politics or even entertainment), I will probably investigate.

So....I guess you guys AREN'T interested in my plot of swamp land in Florida?

It's real.

Would this face lie?

:D
You know, that actually (and I'm serious) happened to some extended (extended, extended) family in the 60s or something. They are apparently millionaires (you definitely couldn't tell it by looking at them though!). I met them once. No one in the family even knew that branch existed until about 20 years ago or so when my grandma found out that her sister was really her mother.

You can ask Bonz to change your name. She'll let you do this once a year.

Okay "way back when RevdKathy was still the mod" is about last Tuesday - she hasn't been out of green that long!

Cool, thanks. I thought you had to pay to get your user name changed.

 Oh. See, I haven't been to the FF Forum in ages.

I do remember, though, that I dabbled in fan fic in the late 1990s up until 2002. I had a tendency to get stuck when I was writing "narrative" fan fic stories, not knowing where the direction of the plot was going. Basically, I didn't have everything mapped out most of the time, and I just made things up as I went along, kinda like George Lucas. But I did enjoy creating my own characters and their individual backgrounds.

What I liked better was play-by-email sim (collaborative fan fic). The moderator had a given plot; all the members had to was to elaborate or expand on the premise, and everything was pretty much open-ended.

I've seen too much rubbish in the last 10 years or so to believe anyone on a BBS, except when something is said by someone I know very very well.

I don't care whether they're lying or not, as long as they're funny.

Amuse me, peons. Dance. DANCE! :p

I find I come here less and less for interaction and more just for the entertainment value. There are folks who read as genuine - most, in fact. And there are a few who read as being willing to make up any ridculous thing to get attention or a rise out of others. And there are in-betweeners - people you feel are pretty much themselves but occasionally like to shake things up with a weird story that no one would buy if it weren't for their history on the board. THOSE are the people whom I find both extremely creepy and highly entertaining.

While when I first started on message boards, I was looking for buddies to hang with, I've pretty much gotten over that. There are very few people on this board who are "real" to me in any significant way. It's more like watching a vast array of characters performing an extended improv piece. I imagine, done right, a message board like this could make for a fascinating sociological study.

But yeah, the only people I really believe are those I've "known" via this board for a really long time. And most of them I don't really chat with anymore - not because I don't like them or anything, but just because that's not why I come to the board these days. :)

Oh wow, I remember that poster. I had no idea it was you, though.

I guess the most memorable thing about my posts is my avatar.

Wait...

:(

EDIT: Oddly enough, Juzam Djinn is still listed as a member. It says I registered that name in December 2005, and changed back in June 2007.

Ahh--this explains why this username is still listed as a member.

Looks like nobody bothered to lock this account, either.

I'd suggest sending Bonz or Spiff a pm. Definitely not a good idea to be posting with both ;)
