That's an interesting story. The guy was obviously bored (and sick in the head) and couldn't find anything productive to do with his time. I don't remember that particular poster you were talking about, but I remember one time when a poster said that a BBS member (or one of the Mods) was injured (or worse, killed) in an automobile accident. That was a very sick and twisted thing to say.

See, that's the key. DON'T believe everything you read about on the Web or in e-mails. I try to tell a group of people who send me mass political e-mails and urban legends to take everything with a grain of salt.

I just point them to www.snopes.com

Especially my older friends who fall for any shock value crap. "If you're an American, you'll pass this on" or "If you're truly a Christian, you'll pass this on".

And poor Andy Rooney. How many poorly written fabrications have been attributed to him?

I've done that a few times. Then somebody sent another mass e-mail stating how Snopes.com was an unreliable source of information. Really? If that was the case, then it would be all the more reason not to believe everything on the Internet.

Some of the e-mail junk I get isn't necessarily invalid or untrue, but I get tired of the Right-wing ultra-conservative propaganda people are spreading, and if you don't share their views, you're unpatriotic.

I remember another poster lying about having brain surgery. After a little investigation, Jethro Elvis was able to call him on it. That was bad.

There's a poster that is active here who I believe is at least 10 years older than what he says.

Another poster claims to have a spouse. I won't go into any details, but I am absolutely certain it's bullshit.

Of course, there are the opposites, where you see somebody posting stuff that is obviously a big joke and people take what he says completely seriously.

I admit I lied on this board once.

It was when I broke up with my then-GF (who was also a TrekBBS member). Figuring she would stick around - which she apparently has not - I abandoned my old account, which was the original Mr. Laser Beam, and started over with a new one: Babaganoosh.

At first I tried to make it look different, like it was somebody else, but if my ex ever read any of my first Baba messages she probably knew it was me anyway - as did most of y'all , although after I had been Babaganoosh for awhile, I did come clean about what I'd done, and I don't think anybody really gave a crap.

Deciding I liked my original name, and not wanting to be confused anymore with TEH BABA, I asked for my new account to be changed to my old name. And there we are.

Side note: Where the hell is MadBaggins anyway? When's the next season gonna start?

I did something similar, but for no other reason than I scrambled the password on my old account and thought it was irrecoverable. I left the board 'cos I was spending waaaaaay too much time here, then I decided to come back about a year later as Mister Garibaldi.

That lasted until Mr G. became a flaptain and then Spiffy twigged, merged the accounts, told me I didn't have to play silly buggers and I could have just emailed them. Ach well, the deception was fun while it lasted.

I've seen Mr G mentioned a few times since, most recently in the Doctor Who forum - being completely misrepresented as someone who hated Doctor Who.
