:vulcan: Oh if we are gonna play this for real, officers don't get demoted, they get an offer to resign. If they are demoted then they are in prison, not running special ops for NATO.;)

I figured he was reduced in rank stemming from the incident with Rex in Africa... I didn't realise that officers can't be reduced in rank.

Perhaps he did serve some time because of that, might explain that reference about him being looked at for recrument into the Joes, but messed up.

the weird part is they called him captain, but he wore major's insignia in the flashback. maybe he was a brevet Major but lost it when the African mission went tits up.

There's no such thing as a brevet rank anymore, and hasn't been for decades.

My pet peeve is that despite being such a model soldier, Duke had a (near criminally) non-regulation goatee shaped five o'clock shadow for the entire movie.

Plus, Duke was supposed to be a First Sergeant, not an officer.

I thought he was the Top and not just a team leader in the cartoon. The goatee could mean he was in Detachment Delta and not an A Team Major or Warrent Officer.

Hollywood has rarely, if ever, gotten military rank and structure right.

It depends post WWII, Korea and Vietnam there were enough technical advisers running around. It depended upon the production. Rank insignia for US forces has not changed in sometime, you kind of expect even the most amateur production to get that right even if they did things I've seen like put officer branch insignia on enlisted and general officers, put name tags and qualification badges on the wrong side of uniforms, put combat patches on the shoulders of troops right from basic training etc.

Yes, "Top" means "First Sergeant". That was his role in the original comics.

Top = Top Kick = First Sergeant. also known as 'First Shirt'.

i learnt that from GI Joe. and now you know.

I think it actually came from Top soldier originally. Check out the movie Sergeant Rutledge. In the US Army its a nick for First Sergeants and Command Sergeants Major. about half of them in my experience would not allow you to call them "top". When they went to staff and became a Master Sergeant or just Sergeant Major they are no longer the "Top". As many retired Marines are called "Gunny" retired long service soldiers are called "top".

all i'm going on is what was in the Joe comics and on Duke's filecard(s).

that and Bob Brown calls Blane 'top' in The Unit a couple times.

Master Sergeants in the USMC, and First Sergeants in the Army, those are who are called Top, as they are the top NCOs in their Company.

Just saw it tonight. I got in free because my best friend wanted me to see it with him.
I have to say, although I enjoyed GI Joe as a child, I wasn't as into it as he was, well, we both had a great time! I loved it. It was a lot of fun, fast pacing, action shot after action shot and some fun humor thrown right in.

    Oh, and Rachel Nichols.
    Mmm.... Rachel Nichols.

    Win.

G.I. Joe sequel heads into development

They are impressed enough with the first weeks box, US + WW, to send the sequel into further development. However, the sequel is not yet greenlit as a sure thing.

It may sound blasphemous for a Transformers fan to say, but I actually am more eager for a Joe sequel to get greenlit than a third Transformers film. I think this is partly because a third TF film is a no brainer (on more than one level) whereas Joe really set up itself for a sequel. Now we can truly have "Joe vs. Cobra" in a second film with characters where we expect them to be. I hope this film does slow and steady business since it doesn't appear it's going to explode out of the box office quite the way "Revenge of the Fallen" did.
