Just bought a record player, and uh... now what?

It's just as well that your turntable didn't come with a needle. Used players often have old needles that might damage your records.

Nice. If I had more room, I'd definitely have a turntable. It's nice to know they're coming back. 
Maybe new computers will come equipped with LP drives. I wonder how much data you could store on a record album.

Aw, I love my record player 
but because it's only used on occasion ~ usually 2am after much refreshment when we just have to listen to Thin Lizzy/The Wall/Black Sabbath and I've scrambled around looking for the plugs for the deck, amp and something else that needs to be plugged in, and then I forget which button is for the deck and accidently turn off the speakers... anyway everyone's usually asleep by then so I listen to Joan Armtrading

What I'd like is for a company to press small numbers of vinyl records (as in <10). It's not really feasible as masters have to be made up and so on, but I think custom vinyl would make a good gift.
Well, unfortunately I'm younger than the compact disc so I'm not the best qualified to answer the question. Digging around I see you can get dubplates cut at a reasonable cost but it's certainly not widely available. Shame, it'd be a present my dad would love.

Yes, I remember that, too. It seems like LP 'print on demand' should be feasible.

Record players never really went completely out of style and are enjoying a major comback over the last couple of years.
So many people are just listening to Mp3s now, and moving away from CDs for their music. But there are still a lot of people who want the full package, they want to be able to hold the album cover and examine the liner notes while they are listening to the music. I know this is an important thing for me. Records are a good answer for this.
I know some people say they sound better, honestly I don't really agree with that. I don't really think they sound any better or worse than a CD/tape/mp3 etc... but for me it turns listening to music into an event. I put on the record, sit down and look at all of the packaging and get way more into it. For some people I guess it is a hassle, but it makes the experience better for me.
Plus the eventual (mechanical) error during playback doesn't sound like you're trapped in some kind of digital hell...
I uploaded some pictures of my 1981 Sanyo TPX3 turntable to the website below. As you can see, it's still in almost mint condition for its age! Still has the original needle and even the original needle protector!
