Star Trek XI's inconsistences

"The region of the real Riverside, Iowa, is not as flat as in the movie"? Give me a break. That's like complaining about how many times we've seen Vasquez Rocks.

Or Monument Valley Utah being substituted for Texas in John Ford westerns.

Funnily enough, here is a photo on Flickr of an aerial shot of Riverside.

Their depiction in the film looks quite accurate to me and close enough.

This brings me to a point, not that I can prove that the particular person who said that on that site (notice the several contributors,) isn't from Riverside, however, here is an interesting pattern. This all examples based on real (yet verbatim) complaints and real rebuttals. This is not meant to slam any particular critics.

1.) Ship is built on the ground
A Trekkie's Complaint = Ships can not be built on ground. It's impossible.
NASA Forum = No reason why it can't be, especially in the Star Trek world.

2.) Kirk's Promotion

A Trekkie's Complaint - Makes a mockery out of chain of command. Today's Military wouldn't allow that. This film is a joke!
U.S. Troop Screening in Iraq - AICN gets emails from troops praising the film, seemingly not mentioning anything about the promotion.

3.) Black Hole

A Trekkie's Complaint - It is impossible to time travel through a Black Hole. I am an expert on these and from my experience with black holes it is impossible to do this. They are stupid!
Degreed Scientists and Researchers - Working theories on time travel through black holes aka "White Holes" which suggests time travel is possible through a black hole and was the basis for time travel in a black hole.

4.) Alternate Timelines

A Trekkie's Complaint - They messed up alternate timelines!
Scientists and Former Trek Advisors - They got alternate timelines and "The Many Worlds Interpretation" right.

5.) Riverside, Iowa
A Trekkie's Complaint - Riverside, Iowa is not that flat!
Riverside Residents - Didn't notice the world coming to an end.

6.) Bridge Lighting
A Trekkie's Complaint - The bridge crew can NOT operate with all of those lights in their face!
Fictional Bridge Crew - Operating perfectly normal with those lights!

It's easy to explain why the cadets were all out there - they were stationed at the shipyard. The bar even reflects the name - "Shipyard Bar". (It's why Cupcake calls Kirk a "townie" - Kirk actually lives in the area, hence the nickname. )

Originally I wondered why cadets would even be allowed in the bar at all, but I guess there's not a lot else to do out there at the yard (and even a cadet would have some free time).

I do agree about Kirk's insta-promotion, though. That's not only an inconsistency, it's a load of SHITE. At least the novelization softens the blow somewhat by making it clear that once he leaves Earth, Kirk is a Lieutenant (a rank which he received, or would have received, upon graduation from the Academy).

short version of above post: apologist's view.

The NCC1701 being constructed in Iowa, rather than in San Francisco, as established in TOS. I know, I know. New blood, alternate timeline.
