Why not better nods to other Star Trek shows

USS Excelsior

Commodore

It would seem that there were only 4 recognizeable aliens in this movie, every other alien was just made up for this movie.

They could have easily have had Denobulans, Xindi, Betazoid, Cardassians, Breen, and many others either as characters or just background extras.

And instead of the accident reference of the death of a 120 year old Beagle, there could have been an old T'Pol or ancient Mayweather or something...

There were more than enough nods and winks as it is in the movie.

It's nice to have new aliens, new things for once.
The galaxy is vast, the Federation big, there's no need to keep using the same 4-5 races again and again and again...

Hopefully, we will have more new background & foreground aliens and starship designs in the sequel.

I guess they wanted to throw in a "cute" reference that non-fans would laugh at even if they didn't have a clue who this "Archer" fellow was, because this is a big popcorn summer movie and they care about mass-appeal more than pleasing the real fans, sadly.

Totally agree. Seemed like there was a nod, wink or homage every 30 seconds. They weren't required to fill the film with that much, but the fact that they did says a lot about wanting to please long-time fans at the same time as getting new ones. In other words, you should be very grateful for what we did get, which is more than I was expecting at least.

:wtf: the Porthos line was made for long-time fans, not newcomers

There was no reference in the movie to the death of a 120-year-old beagle. However, there were plenty of references we did see, and several threads in this forum over the last few months devoted to discussing them.

i thought the nods were subtle and well-done. i've converted a lot of people in my family to trekkism because of this movie, and i guess i feel it's less lame to obsess over a forty year old television series now that we finally have a good movie.

besides, no one goes to a film to fill out a checklist of star trek esoterica. you wouldn't have time to watch the movie if you were keeping track of all the references!

Maybe, but I get what Geckothan means - even people who never watched Enterprise would get that Scotty had done something mischevious that had horked off someone important. They could share in the amusement without knowing the details, which makes it a very well-played in-joke on the part of Abrams and company.

Sez you.;)

I've been a real fan for 40+ years and I was pleased.:techman:

I thought they got just the right amounts of "little nods". I'm sure they were being careful not to make the movie seem like fan-wank.

I wonder if, collectively, the STXI-haters are attempting to say some variant of this in every thread in this forum, even when it doesn't really work. Sure seems like it sometimes.

I, for one, loved what nods where in the movie and thought they were cleverly done. I consider myself a 'real fan', and I was pleased.

There are only two nods I missed: Archer at Enterprise's launch cremony (But since there wan no launch ceremony and the launch has somehow been postponed to ten years later I guess that would be difficult), and Morn in the bar instead of his brother.

I have "big popcorn summer movie" in my clipboard ready to paste.

<-- a fan for more than 30 years.

<-- LOVED the new film!!!

That's not to say that it can't please old fans, but the point I was trying to make was that they chose to put in "cute" references that people would laugh at even if they didn't get them or knew where they came from (aka new fans/non-fans) because it's a big popcorn summer movie.

they may not have shown that many of the more well known races but there certainly were references to them.
