New TOS discoveries in HD/DVD

So when he mocks Blu-ray as 'nice & shiney' it's okay, but when i reply DVD is 'Lame & dull' it's rude?

Not mention stupid.

I was referring to this little gem:

But folks feel free to chime in how all the detail seen on Blu-ray, with 6 times the resolution, can be seen on standard DVDs. I'd like to know who the idiots are.

The only examples thus far have been Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. All of those can be seen on tv and sdvd. Again THATS ALL IM SAYING. The title and thread is misleading if it is to incorporate "any format your on" as the first post says, it should include Video tape than, CORRECT???... if we are to follow literally what that first post contains. It says "IMPROVED QUALITY DVD/Bluray. It can be read as Blu-Ray only. It should be SDVD/HDDVD(Bluray) Again he did put "any format" but we are talking "NEW DISCOVERIES" and Improved quality are we not??? So one is to assume recently, not dvd technology from 13 years ago or video from 20+ years ago.
The newly released DVDs (standard DVDs) feature improved picture quality, since they're scaled down from the new HD masters. That's probably what the topic starter was referring to (the slash means "or"). I can see where there is some confusion, though.

Every time I watch an old episode, be it in HD or an older *format, I would LOVE to see something i haven't noticed before. The shoes, I noticed the first time I saw it in the early 80's, when i was a kid, on my old craptacular B&W non-cable TV (ugh). The newer res TV's in the 90's let me see faint stuff written on and beside buttons. The newest stuff let me see set pieces that were buckled and not so well put together- not the coolest thing to see. Other then that, there's not a heck of a lot of things I've missed over the years because of the quality... Damnit.

*(side note, because of the superior quality, various beta formats were still being used as masters by sport broadcasters up until at least 2001, when I worked for Skate Canada)

I only season I currently own is season 1 on blu-ray, so here som observations I've made over the years on many formats.

Man Trap.....At the end when Kirk says, "I'm sorry Bones." a rather large moth flies behind his head.

In Charlie...When Charlie hurls back Kirk/Spock---Nomoy's knee breaks the (dry)wall of Rand's cabin

In Galileo....When Gatano gets the phasers from the compartment the actor completely misses the button.

In Galileo..when Boma sticks his head in the shuttle to say something you can see a stagehand (or the actor himself) shut the lower panel manually

In Balence....especially noticable in blu-ray....when kirks gives his speech to the crew his Toupee at his 'widow's peak' has begun to peel away from his skin. it's the most noticable I've ever seen his toupee peeling.

In City....the coffee Edith & then Spock pour is giving off NO steam.

In Where No.....the shadow of a boom mike is very visible in Blu-ray on the green wall behind Mitchell/Dehner in sickbay

In Enemy....the insert shot of 'evil' kirk's phaser is the larger (type 2?) and he clearly has the smaller one before and after. (Although he stole the larger style one from Fisher in the first place)

In Charlie...when Kirk talks to charlie in the corridor before charlie tags along to the bridge, Kirk's shirt has shrunk so much that the entire zipper seam is stretched to the limit.

In Charlie....when Charlie is on the bio-bed doing the leg pump, the insert shots show the actor's reflection in the glossy readout area.

In Man trap....when Sulu touches the 'deceased' Barnhardt his eye noticably flutters. (Barnhardt's eye that is )

In Man Trap....I read that the actor playing Prof Crater separeated his arm the day before the shoot & was in great pain. You can see he favors it through-out the episode. It sags low and he keeps his right hand in his pocket often--even when running after 'Nancy'. What a trooper.

In Enemy.....when Kirk applies the make-up to his scratches you can see that the mirror, that they have in all their cabins, have beveled edges. To prevent the upper beveled edge from picking up boom mikes, lights or rafters they have placed black electrical tape over ONLY the upper bevel. I only saw this on Blu recently.

In Where.....when they show Dehner/Mitchell's bios you can it looks like they used 'white-out' to alter the statistics.

In Enemy.....I find it funny when Sulu heats the big rock, instead of all 4 huddling around it they form a front row/back row formation.
What rank do you have to be to sit right next to the hot rock?

In Man Trap......... as Nancy first approaches she is singing but her mouth is not moving. Or did she hypnotize me into thinking she was singing?

Man Trap.....when Crater blasts the middle pillar (of 3), holding up the arch---Kirk takes cover under the same arch:lol:
Did he teach tatics at the academy?

Man Trap...as kirk crawls along the ground his communicator keeps popping open, but makes no sound.

Naked Time......Sulu sword is bent on the end---his foil that is.

In Archons.....a huge rock hits Lindstrom on the head----no effect!

In Archons....Sid Haig (lawgiver #1)was just as ugly in 1966 as he is in 2009.

In Archons....the door the crew runs into is diiferent from exterior/interior..Same with the window Kirk looks out upstairs.

In Archons....why doesn't Sulu at least hold his ground & bat away the 'hollow tube' as the lawgiver approaches? He only needs seconds for the beam to take him.

In Shore....why does the black knight's face look so fake? I know it wasn't important that his face look normal under the visor, but was the 'caretaker' saving money on the 'good fake skin' ?

In Shore....they of course switch back and forth between US & Jap. aircraft.

In Shore....you can see the chain around the tiger's neck as they run past.

I have hundreds more, but this is a gigantic post as it is---so i'll post more later.

You don't need hi def to see this one: In Metamorphosis, when Cochrane runs up to the shuttle to greet our heroes, the stage lights cause massive vertical flares across the sky painting, and as the pan ends, the edge of the sky cyclorama is plainly visible stage right.

In Charlie.....when charlie makes Rand's picture appear on the cards---you can clearly see they are much thicker than the others--probably from photos being pasted to regular playing cards.

IN Operation:....(not a visual sighting but,) why is the already infected Mrs Sam Kirk trying to block the vent. Sam is dead and the boy is unconscious, so why?

In City.....the calendar shows it's June in the mess hall, because the 14th (flag day) is highlighted in red. Wow, Edith was right when she said that it wasn't that cold out.

In Dagger....On Blu-ray Van Gelders acne scarring is nearly unbearable to look at & poor George Takei. Blu-ray is no friend of his.

In Where No....you can see Gary's foot breaks through the force field on the planet, but the rest of him can't. His foot had the highest esper rating of all.

In Enemy....Kirk's shirt has no insignia while on the planet.

IN Naked....the women dead in the outpost is a manequin...........I know I know you could see that on a 9 inch B/W TV with terrible reception.

I just got a HiDef tv yesterday and watched a bit of where no man has gone before.

I found the picture shocking at first becuase it was so different from watching dvd's on my old tv.

The level of detail on the blu-ray takes a bit of getting used to. I don't know if I like it or not.

There CAN be too much of a good thing. Like a nice hi-res digital papparazzi closeup of your favorite hot celebrity chick without makeup, where you can see she has blotchy skin, big pores, a mustache, bloodshot eyes, a pimple and one of those red mole thingies.

Instead of concentrating on the episode I was being pulled out of it by seeing zips and fasteners.

Somehow it went from looking like a ship to looking like a set.

I don't have the dvd sets that you have, but I DO have them on VHS (anyone have them on Betamax?..lol) ....

I only recently tossed my Beta copy of Errand of Mercy. It was the first ep I bought, just before my Betamax crapped out and we switched to VHS.

The NY Museum of TV and Radio had a special Menagerie expo in the late 80's and I have The Menagerie in a collectible case on Beta. Not gonna throw that out.

this is so incisive i hope you go to other threads and push your theory that hi-def is 'too much' detail. And use the exact same phrase each time.

Oh wait i can see you are already doing that.

It didn't look MORE like a 'a ship' because the colors were faded and the contrast was off and because it had dirt & specs & tears & hairs & fibers & warps on the print.

In fact, they corrected the contrast so that many of the 'ship scenes' are darker, more moody and you actually see less things.

Some of the directors knew that the plastic and wood sets weren't all that great looking and they filmed the scenes rather dimly lit.

this made it more atmospheric and the 'Trek world' reason was that the ship altered the lighting to simulate night and day aboard ship.

when the show was syndicated, stations turned up the brightness so details would be more easily visible.

It's funny how the luddites keep trying to turn this into an anti hi-def thread and won't stick to it's theme.

Details that are more easily seen on DVD & Blu-ray.

In What Are.....the glass 'window' behind Chapel and Kirk when they beam down is much more obvious. I mean I always got the sense that there must have been something keeping out the cold & wind but when I first saw it on DVD it was like, "Oh look at that thick plexiglass barrier behind them."

IN What Are.....(not a new sighting) after Kirk leaves his cabin with the 'command pack' they show stock footage ofhim walking through the corridor----without the command pack. I don't get why they felt the need to add that pointless stroll through the ship that creates a continuity error. If they needed a few seconds of film to pad a short running episode----just throw in 15 seconds of Andrea walking around.

Ummm slow turns

and, "Andrea pick up that object over there on the floor---no not that one the other one."
Robot Corby must have thought Chapel pretty naive---create a robot assistant that looks like that and is dressed like that and nothing's going on!

Oh thought of another one.........

In What Are......the insert shot of 'Kirk' untying the rope from the chair is probably not Shatner's hand. The back of the hand and wrist is fairly hairy. Shatner clearly waxed his body in this episode as can be seen when he's be 'duplicated'

Almost all the episodes where Shatner had his shirt off he got waxed beforehand.

I read an interview where he confirmed that he shaved (not waxed...were they waxing in the 1960's?) for his Kirk role...and that it itched like crazy.

that's very interesting !!

But I'm sure in Hollywood by the 60s they had invented waxing.

full body shaving? Ouch.

I don't know when Hollywood started waxing. I was 6-8 years old when Star Trek was originally broadcast, and was still looking forward to having hair where there was previously no hair.

So was I and now i want all that hair (or most of it) gone. Why do i now need hair in my ears ???

Hey you took me off topic.......
Okay........................................

In Where No.....the little bushes Mitchell creates have a texture that i never saw in any format until i just saw them in Blu-ray. Not a particular 'find', but they look far cooler than they ever did before. They look almost mushy plastic, but in a good way---like an exotic alien type of look where before they just looked like standard plants in their texture.

Oh wait i can see you are already doing that.

Why so defensive? Pindar made valid points.

I have seen a few Blu-Ray TOS eps now, and I'm sure we aren't supposed to see the line where Nimoy's pointed rubber eartips meet his real ears, and I can see this pulling people out of the episode.

Perhaps Blu-Ray is best for movies and TV shows made with the knowledge of what Blu-Ray will show? I'm planning to buy a Blu-Ray player in time for the release of JJ's ST movie, but I probably won't re-buy TOS since I now have it in Beta, VHS, twice on DVD and (Season One in) HD/DVD.

Not defensive at all.

I'm sad for folks who can't enjoy the hi-def experience of TOS without being 'pulled out of it' by the line on Spock's ear makeup. It's more evident in some shots than other and i noticed some particularly bad ear seam's way back in the VHS days.

Before TOS ever came out in hi-def, some people were doing this sky is falling thing about how terrible TOS will look in Hi-def.

Now that they those fears have been proven wrong ---a few still want to push this theory.

The friends i have shown season 1 to are very surprised by how good it looks and how a show shot that far back can come out so nice. They say they feel like they are really drawn into the stories.

Several of my friends have purchased the Blu-rays since.

But hey, if folks want to watch it with just the sound and no picture----go for it---- you can't see any errors and it's still good drama !!

But beware those audio errors---like the richochet sound effect used in Man Trap

But you can't accept that Pindar had an opposite reaction?
