USS Enterprise Petition

Mysterion

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Hi, folks.

If you go here (http://ussntrprs.epetitions.net/), you will see a petition to enourage the US Navy to name the forthcoming aircraft carrier CVN-79 Enterprise. This vessel will enter service after the current Enterprise (CVN-65) has left service. I would encourage anyone with an interest in tradition to sign their naes to this petition. We don't need another carrier named after a politician, do we?

Thanks for reading.

No.

It's time to retire the name with honor.

The Big E was the single most famous ship of WW2, holding the line against the Japanese. Did you know a badly clobbered Enterprise was the ONLY functioning carrier in the Pacific at one point?

The Nuclear E carried the name with distinction, it's time to give it a rest for a few decades... perhaps reserve it for a future interplanetary exploration ship. :techman:

But...but..."Enterprise" is classic and timeless. It's a name that every generation should know.

Oh please...

Pretty sure multiple things can carry the name at once... considering that's already the case :p

What's the fate of CVN-65? Scrapped? Converted? Stolen by her captain to save his re-aged XO but ultimately set for self-destruct?

Have signed the petition, by the way.

Touche. What happened the last time we held Enterprise out there without giving the franchise a rest?

I can understand where you're coming from. If not CVN-79, how about one of the new CVX carriers currently on the drawing boards?

That would be acceptable.

The current generation of carriers are "people" names. Lets wait a bit and start a new class "enterprise class" or whatever and name them with the Classic names. (Ranger, Langley, Lexington, Enterprise, Saratoga)

Currently I think navy policy is to reserve those names for cruisers, at least with names based on famous battles like Lexington and Saratoga.

I may be totally blind, but what were they originally going to name the ship? I didn't see a mention of what politician it would be named after . . .

Enterprise! FTW :D

*shudders*

I HATE the fact that we name some of our mightiest warships after politicians. Aside from the battle-scheme we have going for our cruisers, I think the UK has a far better overall scheme for naming its vessels.
