First up, the good news - HBO has renewed True Blood for a third season!

Now, about this week's episode, from zap2it.com:

Maryann and her minions put Sam in a difficult situation; Sookie uses her telepathic powers to reach out to Bill; Jason tries to sever his ties with the Fellowship of the Sun.

I say bring it on!

I'll be a little later than usual in my comments. I'm going to watch at least a little of Defying Gravity, which is a new show that starts in True Blood's timeslot, before moving to 10 pm EST next week. But don't let that stop you from discussing!

Yay for more Bill/Lorena flashbacks! Loved Bill's smoking jacket

Hugo was the traitor! Oopps...Isabelle is gonna be pissed!

It was a pretty good episode, but no one remember the orgy but Sam and the new town drunk Andy?

Buh Buh Daphne :p

Bill's life ruined by Eric and his maker.

Barry's life ruined by Sookie.

Everyone's life ruined by Maryanne.

Jason's life...?

But Hoyt and Jessica's romance is sooo sweet.

Eric is a douchebag. He needs a major ass whupping.

I like what Bill was reading back in the 1930's. "Ancient Greek Gods and Monsters" (or something like that).

Sam can cross animal kingdoms when shifting...hmmm...could he turn into a dragon and fight ANGEL? :p

I've carefully avoided referring to Sam as a were- or Were-animal, because he's not. Now that Daphne has "outed" other Supes in this show, we can talk a little more about them.

There are Weres (capital). These are Were-Panthers, Were-Tigers, and other big cats, but usually when Weres are involved, they are Were-Wolves. Capital Weres are big, tough, and are usually biker-types, or in the military. Places that it wouldn't be out of the ordinary for the human side to be big, built, tough.

Then there are the weres (little). These are supes that turn into other animals ... wererabbit, wereowl, etc. Small, not all that powerful.

Then there's Sam's type. They are Shifters. Shifters can morph into any animal type they choose ... they are not limited to one specific animal form. There is a slight problem with Sam's ability, though it's not really come out on the show all that much. He can only Shift into the most recent animal he's seen. When you look around in his office, there is a picture of that dog he turns into. He also has that dog as a pet. That's the last animal he saw, so that's what he turns into. Tonight, he saw an owl, so that's what he could turn into.

And there are a LOT more on the way. ;)

I'm glad Daphne is gone. I wanted her gone awhile ago. I didn't see her really bringing anything to the show. Though the way she bit it wasn't very nice, it was typical MaryAnn.

Poor, silly, Barry. He's still new to all this. I love seeing him at this stage.

I think Hoyt is the most realistic character on this show. Everything he's done recently has been invented for the camera, and I think it's working well. It's grounding the fantastical in reality. And I like that.

Just gotta say, "modern" Godric is HOT.:drool::drool: Allan Hyde, the actor, definitely brings the pretty. :bolian:

Another awesome episode filled with the usual craziness!

How are the books compared to the series, storywise? Is it a faithful adaptation or is it one of those where only names are left from the books and rest is made up?

Weeeelllll ... Yes and no. The basic gist of the book is there, with a whole lot of stuff added in.

The books are all first-person, from Sookie's point of view. In book 2, when she goes to Dallas, we don't have a clue what's going on back home, except when she calls home. And then it's just a snippet. And the "MaryAnne" character in the series is a major character. In the book, she's a minor character at best.

As has been said before, the Tara in the books and the Tara in the series are not the same characters. Book-Tara is a minor cameo character, a white woman friend of Sookie's who owns a dress shop. There is no Eggs, or Jessica, etc., yes they are blended into this world seamlessly.

There are changes that have been made, but nothing so major that it has thrown off the book fans. I think we all realize they are not the same, and just go with it.

I think I remember Alan saying each episode is basically one chapter from the books, and that seems about right. And each book is one season of the tv show. Next up will be Club Dead, and then in season four, the rabid Eric fangirls get their unhead hearts' desire. ;)

Loved the episode. I really get some Angel/Darla vibes when I watch the flashback scenes from the 20's and 30's.

In a some what related note, I got engaged a couple of weeks ago, and we've been looking for a chapel to get married in next year. We came across this very beautiful place in Ft. Worth which is just about 15 minutes away from where we live. My fiancee really likes it, and imagine our surprise when that same chapel turned up last episode as the Fellowship's HQ. Hopefullly will get a chance to go there sometime soon to tour the place before we book it. I'll ask if I can see the basement. :)

Thank goodness that Ball is NOT going 'by the book' exactly, as Lafayette would be dead now (in the books, HE was in Andy's car).

;)

Everything from Sookie's p.o.v. wouldn't make for a good t.v. show. I'm not dissing the books, never read them. Just saying, it wouldn't make a good series.

It's the same with the Dexter novels. They are all from Dexter's POV (or is it just the first two?), and as such the characters are very different from what they're like on the TV show (LaGuerta really WAS a shallow bitch out for her own reputation and nothing else. She was killed by Brian at the end of the first book). Rita's kids for example: in the books Dexter realized they are both sociopaths in the making like he was and wants to guide them.
