Could it really be this simple?

1. I've sort of done this, if contacting old friends counts but not actually meeting them
2. I do this every day
3. I'm working on this one
4. I don't watch any actual television to begin with, just DVDs, so this one is irrelevent
5. I goto concerts every now and then
6. I don't need new challenges or hobbies, music is challenging and interesting enough
7. I do this every other day
8. I do this half the day
9. Do cats count?
10. I don't care about most news anyway

I don't feel any happier at all.

I like these. They de-emphasise runaway materialism and negative input and promote taking care of yourself physically and mentally. What else is there? :)

1. Works everytime
2. Have a few fail-safe dvds for those moments
3. Always feel noble after walking to and from the pub
4.
5 & 6. Been doing this for a couple of years now ~ planning trips for concert, days out, instead of gifts ~ working on conquering joint fear of heights, have done Spiniker tower, London Eye, working on weekend in Paris for La Tour Eiffel ;)
7. Make it a 3 hour lounge with a good book and a jug of Pimms
8. Not long enough ~ make it an hour whilst cooking a fab meal
9. Go with Geck on this one ~ my cat, apparently it lowers blood pressure
10. Probably should do but I'm natuarally too inquisitive.

But there are others... perhaps that's another thread...:)

  1. Meet up with a friend that you haven’t seen for a while.

  8. Spend ten minutes listening to relaxing or uplifting music
  9. Stroke a dog
  10. Stop watching and reading the news

All good adviced except for number 10: I don't think that becoming uninvolved with what's happening in the world is a good idea.

There's a lot of anti-cat hatred going on here ...

Surely #9 should be "stroke a cat". Listening to a purring cat is supposed to be relaxing.

Sounds like a good list to me. Especially that last one...I find that when I tune out the news for a few days I suddenly feel lighter and better about the world.

All of those things sound really great...of course the problem is that people don't usually have the time to get them all done. I know I don't, though I do probably have a busier schedule than most. I would love to work out more, go for walks, listen to music, start a new hobby, etc. but I have to work two jobs and be a graduate student, so that's not gonna be happening for a while...

I think this is a great list and I try to achieve it. I like the irony of the Times telling us to avoid the news media.

Do we actually need to be told those things? I wonder what someone who does none of those things would be like... I'll bet some of them are still perfectly happy.

And just because I'm me...

  • Meet up with a friend that you haven’t seen for a while - I don't have any friends to meet up with. Being stuck in social situations is more likely to make me unhappy than anything else.
  • Exercise for about thirty minutes three times a week - Going outside in exercise clothing is likely to make me unhappy.
  • Cut your television viewing by half - Already doing that. Television gets worse with every year.
  • Buy experiences not goods - go to a concert, movie, unusual place or strange restaurant - Such places just aren't designed for people to go to on their own. "Experiences" are made for people with friends who enjoy being social.
  • Create novel challenges by starting a new hobby, joining an organisation, or learning a new skill. - Hobbies are okay, but the second two are for social people.
  • Go for a 20 minute walk in the sun. - I already do this regularly.
  • Spend ten minutes listening to relaxing or uplifting music - I do this a lot. If my Battlestar Galactica soundtracks can be considered relaxing or uplifting.
  • Stroke a dog - I do this a lot too.

I don't think these lists take a broad enough sample of people in to account. Happiness to the people who write them is entirely dependent on other people.

1. Feh. I'm not traveling to Texas.
