the CHAIR

Well excuse me, but I think you've got my chair...

Well, I tried to sound like George Strait. How did it sound to you?

So I am watching the Wrath of Khan, and TUC this weekend, and something about Star Trek has always bothered me in a nitpicky kind of way. The chairs.

During the battle with Khan, I was watching Spock swivvel back and forth in his chair, as he did duties, when I realized; I have that same chair in my office. Pretty good when you consider that KHAN came out in 1982, and perhaps back then, these kinds of chairs were futuristic..

Of all the techonological advancements they show in TREK, the technology of Chairs sees to be in centuries long slump by the time the 23rd century gets here. Yeah, I know, what do I expect? You can't really do much to make chairs look futuristic, and maybe, they never will evolve past what we have here in the early 21st century.

Have there ever been SCIFI movies, or other TREKS, that show advancements in Chair tech? Or are metal seats, and swivvel office chairs here to stay...

...well, I like you to, but to tell you the truth; that wasn't my chair afterall...awwwwww...

I think the best thing for chairs would be either creating a holographic set of chairs and the table for a meeting, or have a small "force field" projector that can create a chair at the flick of a switch.

That would work better if you were in a section of space where you are more likely to encounter a non-bipedal entity, since they might not "sit" the way a human or it's ilk would.

Great idea! and cool sounding..but I can already here Berman, Benett, Roddenberry and JJ saying "cost prohibative"..but i liked them!

However, that raises the same question from the "Brig" thread.

Why in God's name would you make a wall to keep someone in that will just disappear if the power goes out.

Same with a chair. I wouldn't want a holo-chair or forcefield chair in a fire fight. One good shot and your entire bridge crew is on the deck.

ummm..good point. Perhaps the Jem-Hedar had the answer..no fricking chairs!!!

DAMMIT! :scream:

Here I was, looking at the name of this thread and all ready to come in and make a completely irrelevant comment about the song by George Strait - and it's already mentioned in the OP! :klingon:

Well, thank you. (Could I drink you a buy? ;))

Back on topic - How about an electrically responsive material that can be reshaped with applied current, but then becomes inert? That might provide the futuristic-ness and the ability to accomodate alien shapes that we seem to be looking for, without the risk of disappearing chairs in an emergency.

You call that a Chair? This...

Is a Chair.

Those chairs from Space:1999 were fairly unique looking,, for the time anyway..

Simplicity is always proffered to unnecessary complications. Why have holographic chair, when you can have a real one that's not dependent on power supply?

For 2 reasons. First is that a holographic chair can be configured to fit whatever type of body was going to sit in it. And the second would be that if there was a meeting taking place and everyone was sitting around a table.....and then the ship hits something or takes damage or all of the people and chairs and other objects are violently thrown throughout the room. If the chairs were holographic, they could be set to become holographic in an emergency like that to prevent that chair from hitting someone.

It might be a stretch, but you never know....

The first reason sounds good, and I read it when you made the initial post, but I dismissed it because it sounds energy-cost prohibitive to have a holographic system in place and risky if power goes out. If ships have regular crew, or an occasional alien guest, they can easily replicate a chair which is a one-time energy cost.

The second reason, they can just fix them in place :techman:

Just started watching TNG and the curvy chairs at helm and ops do not look comfortable: no lower back support. They remind me of the "tv-watching" chair my friend had in his basement. Maybe since you semi-recline, they're ok?
