It would not have surprised me, they're a rather unusual couple.
Well, that's making the best of an outdated tradition. 
Just wanted to update everyone who offered advice in this thread. The ceremony was today and it went well! Several people came up to me later on in the day and told me that I did a terrific job. A few even said that I was better than the officiant!
It was really just a lovely, simple wedding and I was so happy for my friend. I've seen so many weddings and I think the love and affection of the guests are really what matters.
Okay, I also loved the fact that there were probably a few people in the room thinking "Who is this Indian girl reading things out of the Bible?"
