Changes coming to the MLB Draft?

There has been some rumblings that the MLB draft could see some changes in the near future including the possibility of trading draft picks (lol) to a cap on how much a prospect makes at a given slot. More and more teams are also allocating money to their scouting departments as they try to develop more talent within their organization than relying outside.

I think this is way over due personally.

Wow, I didn't even realize MLB teams aren't able to trade draft picks. Jockeying for a better position on draft day is such a staple in the NHL, it just seems like the natural way of things.

I heard that recently too and thought that was weird. In other sports, it's common to swap picks for players or other picks.

I like the rookie salary cap idea too.

The rookie salary cap does sound like a good idea. The NFL needs to seriously look at doing something like that. The record contracts rookies keep getting every year are a little ridiculous.

I think the MLB draft is pointless, personally. Most of these prospects don't show up for years and years, and are traded several times.

What would be the alternative? Even though it may take longer for a player to reach the majors in baseball than in other sports, they have to start somewhere and there has to be some way of deciding who goes where. Since it takes time to develop players, baseball's farm system is one of the few things that gives teams without deep pockets a fighting chance to be successful. But they need the draft in order to have a chance at landing good prospects in the first place.
