BTW, I think it was Jeri who commented in another thread that I was seriously invested in Trek. (Maybe it was that whole thing about the major entertainment system purchase). You know, some folks would make a major TV purchase just so they can watch something inane- like Super Bowl games. I however have my priorities straight. McCoy and Pike on my future big screen plasma TV, Bose sound system. Plus my B5 DVD's will be f@&king awesome on that system. Anyone in the Nashville area is welcome to come join me when I get the thing installed.

YAY! I finally have a job that will let me contemplate such purchases. I may have champagne tastes, but at least I now have a Pinot Grigio budget- 'cuz I really loathe beer.

Mereope, congratulations, and I am right behind you. We're getting a blu ray player for this. We already have a big screen downstairs, but I'm going to upgrade to HD upstairs in my hidey hole, where I glom late at night.

Tip: empty popcorn containers make great drool buckets. And keep you from being banned from the theater for making a mess...

The sad thing is since I watched ST:IV for the...umpteenth time last night, it reminds me of Julian running into the cloaked warbird while she was looking for Kirk and being knocked back on her feet by the outside of the invisible ship.

I saw it several years ago, and I really enjoyed it. All I could think of at the time was how much I wished I had the ability to jump into my favorite movies. If that could happen now, I picture poor Bones running in fear for his life--and his virtue--if all of us in this thread jumped into "Star Trek."

Completely irrelevant and OT side detail: I work just a few miles from Jeff Daniels' Purple Rose Theater in Chelsea, MI. We drive right by it when we go out for lunch in Chelsea, which we do about once a month. Obviously, Jeff must have enjoyed his experience of making the movie, since he named his theater after it. I haven't been to see a play there yet yet, but I'm hoping we can finally do that this fall.

Jeff seems like a great guy; we knew he lived in Michigan. The midwest is a nice place to live, and lots of people don't forget it. Harold Ramis moved back to Chicago several years ago when he didn't want his kids growing up in Tinseltown.

Things about Purple Rose of Cairo that especially remind me about now are the economic times and movies' role in them. It's been in the news that movies are doing great in this economy, like they did in Purple Rose's Great Depression. I think that's what that movie is all about; people yearning to be swept away.

Jeff is one of this state's biggest boosters. He's currently on a series of radio commercials that encourage investment in Michigan businesses. Like you said, he seems to be a great guy who doesn't forget where he came from.

And that's such a good point about the escapism, Jeri. When my husband raised his eyebrows at my 10th viewing of ST this past Friday, I remind him that it's my happy place at the moment. He was laid off in March and is not having any luck finding another job (plus several family members are out of a job or in danger of being so). Luckily, I have a good job that can pay our bills and is as secure as it can be in Michigan, which is of course the current economic armpit of the U.S., but we also can't sell our condo at the moment, my job has been stressfully busy because they're not hiring the additional people we need at the moment--all the same stuff that many others in our state and in the country are suffering through right now.

Sometimes, I just need to escape from all that gloom and doom. And when I go sit in the theater to watch Star Trek, for two hours I don't think of anything but the movie. I'm totally engaged in what's on the screen, and it's like a small mental vacation (with hot guys) that gets me back on track and ready to face whatever else might rear its ugly head. Mr_Whatsit gets his mental rest from working on his computer. I, on the other hand, require a little Dr. McCoy as my prescription. So I can totally vouch for your theory.

I like that! Yes, my line is that it's great to get off planet for a while and hang with my Starfleet buds. I saw the movie 20 times (you have my permission to use as a comparison to put yours into perspective), and I give my husband big props on that. He went with me for all but about five of those. I think it will be a great memory that supersedes the economy.

I know. I'm not exactly sure how I'm going to make it four months until the DVD comes out. We don't really have any dollar shows in this area that I know of, so once it's gone from the first-run theaters, it's out of here. I'm going to be like an addict denied her fix. I can see it now...

Policeman: "We've got another Star Trek jumper, boys! Damn it, why don't they get that DVD out on the shelves? Mrs_Whatsit, this is the police! Come down off that ledge!"

Mereope, I think you're very practical - get the goods that will get maximum enjoyment from your obsession! I applaud you!

When you consider all the things one could waste money on, and then consider the hours and years of enjoyment you'll derive from your HT system, golly, it just seems downright "prudent"! Necessary even!

However, as someone with 30+ years in high end audio, and a hi def display/HT enthusiast for over 7 years...let me offer you a piece of advice:

If you haven't actually purchased that dream HT system yet, I suggest you ditch the Bose. Their speakers are to good sound reproduction what Transformers is to intelligent science fiction - or as a quarter pounder is to real steak, except more expensive. Bose has the best marketing in the US but their products are inferior to other options. They're the most over-priced HT components in the HT industry. If you are entranced by the little cubes, be aware that there are other "little speaker" systems on the market that are much better sounding.

PM me for alternate suggestions when you get ready.

Also look for a Blu-Ray player that has good upsampling for your standard DVDs - you'll be amazed how good they can look, although BR discs are absolutely stunning.

this movie came at a great time.
and it isnt all nice nice and fun in games.
i think one reason it works is that it shows that people can not just survive something horrible happening but come out as better people in the end.
even though they may be very different.

in a lot of ways it is the essence of what gene was at during tos.

oh yeah and with little touches of humor thrown in .. also very tos/

i do wish they had allowed urban's bones to be more of the philosophery as things got more serious.
it is one of the few things i think would have made it better.
one of those great one on one scenes with bones and kirk together or even bones
scene where bones acts as mediator between spock and kirk as spock sees why kirk did what he did on the bridge.

But all I had to go on was listening to the sound system at Best Buy... and the idea that Bose was a really good audio set. When I read your comment I hit The Google. Wow, a Veronica Lake movie. I don't think I've ever seen Sullivan's Travels, but the wiki article looks interesting. I'll get the TiVo looking for it; thanks.

Anyway, all the talk in that other thread about whether Jim and Gaila's scene was indecent has certainly got me wishing and hoping they have a scene with Bones in the sequel that makes everybody wonder whether it's indecent!
