The Final Ongoing Star Trek Box Office Thread

I think I have an explanation for the big increase for Terminator 4 on Wednesday. I don't think it was a mistake. It probably was included as a double feature with Harry Potter at the driver-in theaters, so it got a boost from the HP movie. Trek got a similar bump when Transformers opened, and for the same reason.

Aha! Sneaky Warner Bros., putting their less-successful summer blockbuster with their surefire hit for a double-feature...

I'm curious, though. I've never been to a drive-in theatre, so do you generally have to pay for two films if there's a double-feature, or just one? And if you'd only have to pay for one, does that mean the money made from the ticket is divided so that an equal amount goes toward the box office returns of each film?

I haven't been to one in a very long time, and have no idea what prices they charge these days. But there is a single payment and you can watch both movies. I don't know how they divide they money between the 2 movies (whether it's 50/50 or some other ratio) but the second movie obviously has to get some share of the boxoffice.

...I wonder how much Paramount spent on that massive premiere there with the giant inflatable Enterprise.
Geeze, hadn't heard about that one.

It's pretty cool actually. They should put it on display somewhere.
From back in November:

And one last quote from Abrams at The Hollywood Reporter has some scratching their heads. In talking about the marketing of the film, Abrams told the trade:
"Oh, there’s a whole crazy campaign that is going to … It’s insane. We have a life-size Enterprise, but I’m not allowed to talk about it."

It will be lucky to be in the top 8.

Hangover is poised to overtake Trek in a couple of weeks!!!!

That's a pretty sad commentary on America. Another ridiculous 'gross-out', 'sexy, 'slob-buddies' comedy pushing the quarter billion mark in 2009.

That will put trek in 4th. With Harry Potter out & Avatar and others opening in the fall.

Just like 1982----TWOK did great and then ET and Poltergiest and a couple of other stole the show.

Wow, I just checked.

Porky's made 105 million in 1982 !!! TWOK 78 million. The more things change the more they stay the same................

The Hangover was funny but I think it's overrated. It's definitely benefiting from other major summer comedies bombing (Land of the Lost, Year one).

Not true at all. Those targeted a totally different audience.

As MvRojo said, it was indeed in 15th place this weekend with $677,000, in between NATM 2 and another sci-fi offering, Moon (which is a great film, BTW, so I encourage everyone to see it if they get the chance). After the weirdness with Terminator Salvation getting a noticeable bump a few days ago, it seems like the movie has dropped out of the Top 20, as has Year One. I'll be curious to see where those films fell after the final numbers are released.

As expected, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was #1 at the box office this weekend, raking in an impressive $159,662,000 after five days of release. However, that's significantly less than Transformers: ROTF's haul of $200,077, 255 after the same amount of time, so it looks like the Hogwarts gang isn't going to be able to wrestle the crown of top-grossing film of 2009 from the Transformers after all.

It wasn't really expected to anyway, considering the fact that the most successful films in the series ended at $317 million or in the $290 million range. HP6 did make $20 million more over the 5-day than HP5, so HP6 could end up being the second most successful in the series.
