OWW! (or WTF have I done to my back?)

Bob The Skutter

In Memoriam
So I was diagnosed with flu earlier, don't know if it's swine flu but have been prescribed some tamiflu.
I got home decided to take some and try to have a nap. I woke with a start a short while later, and when I tried to get out of bed my back was killing.
It's my lower back on the left side, down in to the top of my butt too.

I'm having a hard time walking around, can't even get comfortable sat or laid down. I've taken 20ml of morphine, and some paracetamol and it's done sod all to help, doesn't even seem to have taken the edge off, just made my mouth and throat even drier. I can't sleep, so I thought I'd share my pain.

Zion was just bragging about his new voodoo doll via MSN and now suddenly you are in extreme agony.

Interesting! Hey Zion smite M0DMAN next!

Where on your back is the pain? It might not be normal stiffness or anything like that if you do have the flu. You may want to get checked out depending on the location.

muscular or nerve pain?
Not entirely sure. It seems to be mostly when lifting my leg while walking, or sitting/laying with my weight mostly on the left side it hurts, but doesn't hurt when I push where it feels to be coming from.

If its affecting a muscle group (sounds like it) I'd expect it's a sprained ligament or something cause by waking up with a start.

if it spreads then it's probably the virus.

It could well be msucular pain if it's a dull ache. If it's an actual electrical shooting pain, that's more likely to be nerve pain, but I doubt the Flu could cause that by itself. Muscular ache is more associated with flu than nerve pain.

Last time I had a major Flu (back in 2003) it actually presented with muscle ache instead of respiratory problems. Analgesia is your friend in any case, as is rest and building up energy. If the back pain persists, then gentle walking about will be better than lying around - too much lying around will weaken the muscels and make any pain much worse. :)

I'm saying nothing at this point. :p

Yeah, I don't really do lying around. I'm sure it's down to something only tangentially related to anything I remember.
I have a lot of recurring musculo-skeletal problems with my ankles, which ends up with me having knee, hip, and back pain, so right now I'm putting it down to that rather than the flu. Just included that to explain the afternoon nap... I don't do napping in general circumstances

Of course, having the Flu means your body's energy is focused on fighting the infection in its own way, leaving you less capable of dealing with the things you take for granted each day, so you could be experiencing pain in a different way when feeling run down with the Flu. Either way, paracetamol or other recommended anti-inflamamtories (except the ones you can't take of course) can help along with your antivirals.

And as always with the Flu, take care and Remain Indoors! :bolian:

Aww, I wanna spread it so I'm not alone...
I don't think there's any recommended anti-inflamatories with the bosentan, have to call the pharmacist in Sheffield tomorrow and ask his advice if it doesn't ease off.
I know I've definitely been in this sort of pain before with my ankles so I'm putting it down to that.

I've put some ibugel on, fuck it I'd rather be in less pain than breathing well.

Something seems to be helping this morning whether it's the morphine, the paracetamol or the ibuprofen gel, not much but it's taking the edge off at least.

i have empathy.
spent time with icky pain not bad enough to send one scurrying to the hospital but enough to keep on awake.

one guideline ... are you having significant muscle weakness along with the pain.

another is does the pain significantly increase as your fever rises.

I don't know about muscle weakness, I'm having trouble walking round cos of the pain, and lifting my leg at certain angles, but I can weight bare on it if necessary.

A few people I've told have said it sounds like sciatic, and back problems seem to run in my family.

To be honest my temp was ok last night when it was the worst, and has been high the last hour or so when it's felt slightly better.

if the back pain continues you might need to consult an orthopedist and then a physical therapist.(because then it is something more then being ill.. you may have pulled something ect)
there are some simple things you might try.
back pain sleep
if you want to sleep on your side then the pillow goes between your knees.

Thanks for the advice. I've seen a musculoskeletal consultant in the past. They basically put my back pain, knee and ankle pain are all down to the same same "variable" problem.

I've only ever seen one pharmacist in Sheffield. He wasn't qualified or professional or anything, he just had a big bag full of pills.

I hate that. They've shrugged me off like that as well. It took five years for them to say what he problem was and by then it was way too late.

When this happens to me I try to relax for a day or two to see if the pain starts to ease off, then book some acupuncture, which is the only thing that works for me.

Maybe you just slept awkwardly? I do that all the time and sometimes it can be pretty painful. One time I went to sleep resting on my arm, and when I woke up, I couldn't turn my wrist without my whole arm "burning up" (that's what it felt like), and it took a couple of days before it got any better. Of course if it's muscle pain it could easily just be the flu.

The hospital that prescribes my medication is in Sheffield, hence the idea of calling there. Forgot it was sunday though.

They did describe the problem with my ankle as being a "recurring dislocation" and said that was having a knock on effect on my other joints in my legs. With the pressure I am putting on them when my ankle hurts or with the way I walk.
