The stroke your own ego thread!

I'm awesome at being modest. If modesty was an Olympic event, my shy smile/slight blush combo would win the the gold. I really am that fecking wonderful at being modest.

And I'm pretty damn good at stretching out a weak/barely functioning joke, as well.

I feel no need to stroke my own ego. My awesomeness is such that all are aware and bow down before me as I walk by. Once you've got that, mere words a a frail comparison.

Really, when was the last time you gave yourself a real compliment? Too long ago, I'd imagine...

That smacks of arrogance and narcissism, IMHO.

Nonsense. You are just as deserving of a compliment as anyone else. There's no reason at all to only compliment other people. It only becomes a problem when you continuously compliment yourself instead of other people, or when you do it even when it's not warranted. Refusing to compliment yourself once in a while is denying your own worth. Which is the worst thing anyone can do, IMHO.

Anyone can compliment themselves, so at best it's meaningless and at worst it's self-serving and arrogant. Compliments from others, however, are usually earned, and thus have value.

I disagree. It's an in-built defense mechanism against getting a swelled head.

Oh no, it's not meaningless at all. Self-serving maybe, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing. One should be able to see the value in oneself and acknowledge it. You shouldn't rely on others to recognize positive traits in yourself.

Trust me, I rely entirely on other people's opinions of me and it's gotten me nowhere good.

Go on, compliment yourself. It'll be good for you.

It is up to you to make sure your compliments to yourself are just as meaningful as your compliments to others.

No one gets a swelled head from a few well-earned and earnest compliments. One does, however, from getting many that aren't actually earned, but they can be either from yourself or from others.

Every thread in Misc is actually a Holdfast Strokes His Own Ego Thread. You just all haven't figured it out yet.

But that's not really about me, though...more about the team. Damn, this is all confusing as hell.

Okay, how about this, after some careful consideration: I blend in well as a faux New Yorker. I am of course a complete tourist when I go there (I live in Nebraska) but I try not to look like one. In fact I have heard people with New York accents ask *me* for directions. I do get kind of a pumped up ego when I hear that.

We can hear you stroking your ego from here. It's not unlike the purr of a long-haired white cat being tickled by a Bond villain...

:D

Dear bluedana,

If I were not married, I'd do you.

XOXO,
Me.

Okay, seriously?

Dear bluedana,

You are a good friend. You are kind, and you think of other people a lot. You always keep people's confidences when you say you will, and you tell them the real deal truth, gently, when they need to hear it. You don't go out of your way to hurt people, and you are a strong and focused support in time of calamity.

May you find many people throughout your life of whom you can say the same.

Love, Me.
