Gay couple detained near MORMAN plaza

A kiss on the cheek is not homosexual activity. I often kiss my friends and family, both male and female, goodbye on the cheek. There is nothing sexual in my kiss at all.
The article never said it was, it just said "inappropriate displays of affection aren't allowed on the property".

They reacted the way they did when it began to escalate and the two men became hostile.

I've got a question: Just how private is private property that can be used as a public thoroughfare? The Plaza is used by the general public and not fenced off. So since it is open, is it truly private?

Does my home and yard have to be fenced off to still be private property?

Cutting through my yard is still by law trespassing.

It doesn't matter if there is a fence, it is private property that is open to the public as long as they follow the guidelines of the property owner, the church. When Salt Lake City sold the land to the church, there was an easement for a public sidewalk through the property. The ACLU claimed that this access made the property equivalent to a public thoroughfare, and sued to have free speech restrictions on the property lifted. When the ACLU won in federal court, the city made another deal with the church and gave up the easement. Now the whole piece is private property, and they can basically refuse anyone access to the property for any reason.

I don't know if there are any signs posted about conduct that can have you kicked off the property (although it wouldn't matter once you had been asked to leave). There is a massive construction project in that part of town right now and I avoid it if at all possible.

As far as the church grounds go, they LOOK very public. I've walked through it many times. If one want to get to the Malls, ( well now they're gone), or into downtown area, it's a convenient passway. But private it is even it its open without gates & such.

In SF one finds the complete opposite trend...

WorldNetDaily 8/7/08

Nude men engaged in multiple instances of public sex on a municipal street while police officers, on foot and bicycle, congregated nearby making no attempt to enforce public indecency regulations, according to a report on the latest homosexual-fest in San Francisco [by Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth.]

They featured explicit photographs of oral and anal sex between men and men urinating on each other, among other activities.

At the end of the day the question arises, where would you rather raise your kids? Salt Lake City no doubt.

Um, what the hell does this have to do with the topic? Aside from "gay" and "public space," is there any overlap?

Your yard is open to the public?

We're talking about a plaza that can be and is used by people to walk across. Let me use this as an example. The University I live near has walking paths and chapels that hold Mass that anyone can attend. The university is fenced off on all sides. As a kid I used to cut across the university grounds to get to school. So how private is that property?

The couple did err by not leaving when told.

Similiar situation, same sex intimacy out in the open. Like I said the church grounds are USED VERY in a entirely public manner by people who are not there to visit or view church grounds. rather using it as a transit area.

Mormons are ridiculous. At least with most religions it's a little harder to see just how obviously made up they are because of a couple of thousand years of history passing since their founding. But Mormons? They're pretty much Scientology without the spaceships as best as I can tell.

Uh, no. It's a retread of christian belief (bible and all that) but with "modern day" prophecy and a set of "lost scripture" that somehow was found 20 miles from my house by a farm-boy named Joseph.
Right, and then the mighty golden plates were lost again or something. Why not?
...But I like that "Scientology without the spaceships" bit! :techman: I'll use that on the Jehovah's when they show up next time.
I don't know a ton about Mormons. I think there was the South Park episode, a couple of wikipedia pages, and uhhh, Big Love on HBO. The whole thing comes off as pretty far fetched to me. Oh, and what's the deal, Mormon's don't like Jehovah's coming to their door? I like the irony :)

Re: Gay couple detained near Mormon plaza

It does seem disrespectful at the least. I wouldn't engage in a public display of affection on grounds that I knew belonged to the Church of Latter-Day Saints.

Why not? Disrespecting bigots is fun.

J.T.B. - It is also legal in most places to resist someone who assaults you, and I'd say trying to put someone in handcuffs qualifies as just that.

And that same sex intimacy should only be deemed to be indecent if the same behaviour is deemed indecent when heterosexual do it.

The guys were wrong in refusing to leave, but the kissing and hugging were not wrong.

I would like people to tell me who was in the wrong in the following incident

Several years ago I was sitting on front lawn when two Mormons approached. I straight away said "I am not interested go away". Rather than retreating the said something about it looking like I needed some gardening done and they could help with this. Once again I said "Not interested, go away". Then they asked me if there was anything else I needed done. I said "Go Away"

Were the Mormons trespassing after the first "Go Away". If so, would it be acceptable for me to make a citizens arrest fbecause they were trespassing?

If the Mormons were so concerned about what happened on their property, they should have had a sign that said "We Run This Shit".

Of course, then this thread would have to be "Gay couple detained near MODMAN plaza".

Um, I might point out Heteros are not in the habit of making out on Mormon church grounds. & Miss Chicken peeing on each other is what was considered indecent in SF, not hugs & cheeks kisses. & same sex behavior is by & large considered gross by the masses. It's certainly your prerogative to live the tapeworm & mayo lifestyle, but you shouldn't be surprised or dissapointed when others find it icky. Just the normal reaction to such.

I can say that this isn't true, from personal experience.

Hell, just about every youth group event led to kids making out somewhere on church grounds.
