Most likely the microswitch is worn out. In which case a replacement mouse or a repair is called for.
A temporary solution can be to reverse the handedness of the mouse, since the right button is unlikely to be worn as much as the left, and that will become your new left button.

It's not likely, but there's a possible OS setting causing this.
Go to Start> Control Panel> Folder Options
under the General Tab, there's a setting area to set double click or single click to open an item.
It is more likely it's a bad mouse, but it's something you can check.

Mine always die.
My current set (SilverCrest MTS2218) takes one AA cell in the mouse; I don't have to recharge for weeks -even if I 'forget' to switch off the mouse. (I use a GP Batteries 2700 series 2600 mAh NiMH cell)
