1st release TOS on DVD (season sets)

I went to Frys the other day and just for kicks went to the standard DVD aisle to see if they still sold the DVD set of the TOS...to be surprise, the packaging is now different and no longer comes into the communicator style shell..

Anyone think the first run of these with shell may be collector items?

Anything no longer commercially available turns out to be a valued collector's item by someone who doesn't have one. But they did make a lot of them.

The set depicted above was the US set with Season One as a DVD/HD combo and the Seasons Two and Three as remastered CGI FX.

I ran out and bought the originals as soon as I heard the remasters were being worked on (I much prefer the real deal, warts and all). Sounds like I made a wise choice (for me, that is), if the original un-altered versions are hard to come by (as this thread implies).

The original unaltered versions are on blu-ray in HD. Sounds to me like you misunderstand what remastered means.

The original film is very high-definition. The version you watch is altered in the sense that its definition is severely reduced in order to be seen on a standard definition television. The blu-ray is closer to the "real deal" than the version you watch.

That's the one! I must say, though I own the blu ray set - which is fantastic, I did the shells that came with the season set box sets...I'll probably keep them since they are gone now...

Yeah, those are the remastered versions. The Season 1 set is the HD-DVD/DVD combo, and Seasons 2 and 3 are standard DVD.

They aren't anything special and I'd advise against buying them since you can buy the Blu-Ray versions when they come out which has both the original broadcast and the remastered versions on the same disc. This is assuming you have a Blu-Ray player or intend on getting one.

I'm sorry to everyone for continually being pedantic, but my biggest pet peeve is that no one seems to have a clue what remastered means. The blu-ray features only the remastered episodes. You get your choice between remastered episodes with the original FX or remastered episodes with new FX. No matter which you choose, the episodes are all the remastered versions. "Remaster" has nothing to do with new FX.

Yeah, you don't need to keep repeating that. Suffice it to say, people understand the difference whether you say remastered or not. And in any case, the episodes have essentially been remastered a couple times (first 2-episode DVD release, season box sets, and now BD/HD-DVD/DVD versions).

Hober was simply pointing out the error in your statement: "...Blu-Ray versions...which has (sic) both the original broadcast and the remastered versions on the same disc..."

The blu-ray sets have two versions of each episode, BOTH REMASTERED. The difference is that one version has the original effects and the 2nd version has the new CGI effects.
