Steve McNair was one of my favorite players. This was really shocking when I heard about it recently (what's with all the famous people dying lately anyway?).
Maybe it goes something like this:
They were having an affair, not realy hiding it too well. But then she gets pulled over for DUI in a car he gave her. He's in the passenger seat. She tells the officer she's "high". The cops give Steve the hometown treatment, keep his name out of the report, and send him in a cab home.
Maybe this close call made him realize he was going too far. This could have easily made the front page of the paper: McNair and Mistress Arrested after DUI, Positive Drug Test (or something along those lines). He gets scared, and goes to tell her it's over. She flips.
End of story.

Yet some of the new media reports today have claims fromt the girlfriend's friends/family that McNair was going to divorce his wife in the very near future to be with her.
Maybe he got cold feet at the last minute and was going to back out of it. Using your M.O., the divorce to be with his mistress would have been a media shitstorm on ESPN, etc. She flips, in no small part because her millionaire, beloved sports figure sugar daddy is cutting her off.

He wouldn't be the first man to lie to his mistress and say that he was leaving his wife for her.
On the other hand, the affair seems like somewhat of an open secret. Neighbors saw him all the time, he went on vacation with her.
Yet the wife is apparently 'shocked' by it and swears she knew nothing of it. It sounds like it was pretty open.
Though at the same time that could be covering herself against people saying, "If you knew about it, why didn't you stop it or divorce him?" because again, she's living the good life off his money.

Then she definitely planned it. The guy bought her cars and fed her alcohol even though she wasn't old enough to legally drink. I'm sure he did tell her he'd leave his wife to keep the honey pot spread eagled and willing. That's what her family's saying anyway. It doesn't make any sense that she shot him unless he told her it was over or that he wouldn't leave his wife, Michelle.

So the gun used in the shootings was confirmed to be the one she bought illicitly. I wonder if she was planning this, or worried about her safety?

What a sick twisted story this turned out to me. 
That's totally fucked up. I really feel sorry for his kids. to lose your father in that circumstances? Just awful.
I love it, the mistress is worried that the married guy who's porking her on the side might be seeing another woman.
Are you serious? He's cheating on his wife to see you, and you're worried about him being unfaithful. Like this is some sort of shocker here?
