Pulaski

Correction: She was beautiful on TOS. Even the now-odd-looking 1960s fashion can't alter that. OK, I know I'm a woman and all, but I am pretty sure anybody who hadn't seen her as Pulaski (and even many that had) and saw her in her prime would have to admit that she was beautiful.

I also thought she was OK on TNG - not perfect, but then again, neither was Crusher. She had interesting potential as a character, I thought. I wouldn't say that potential was fulfilled, mind you.

I think that after a year as head of Starfleet Medical. She missed being in a starship and asked Picard if she could return to the Enterprise as wesley was there. Pluaski upon knowing that the position of Starfleet Medical Head would be availalbe she applied and upon her and she got the job as Beverly saw fit that they just swapped roles. Could this have happened?

She never left - she just works opposite shifts to Crusher. :p

Which probably means she works night shift when Data is in command.

I preferred Pulaski - better actress, better character, and more credible all-around.

After all, the only reason Beverly was there in the first place was to provide "conflict" with Picard - because of their past, and his part in Jack Crusher's death.

Pulaski was opinionated, but she stood up for her patients (ie. Deanna, when she was pregnant). She wasn't a static character, as she eventually came to regard Data as more than a mere piece of walking hardware. And she had a respectful relationship with Worf (although I find it difficult to believe that Klingons have a tea ceremony!).

She really brought some life to the doctor role, didn't she? I really liked how she annoyed Picard. :D

One of the recent relaunch novels - prior to Beverly returning to the Enterprise-E - mentioned Picard asked Pulaski to take over for Beverly on the Enterprise-E and she said no because she'd had enough Starship medicine.

are you talking about Death in Winter? that's really the only book I can remember that had Beverly leaving (and returning to) the Enterprise-E. But maybe I missed one of the books.

Sums up my feelings on Pulaski as well.

I'll also add that she was the only character on TNG to truly question and challenge Picard. She really pushed his shit in, which, imo, was what he really needed in terms of his own character development. I had hoped Riker would've been that defiant character, but somewhere along the way he got castrated... oh say about after "Best of Both Worlds, part II."

She felt like a fully-formed character and person, unlike Crusher, and while Pulaski has her roots in McCoy, the character and actress transcended the retread origins in just one season.

Whereas I never felt Crusher moved beyond being Janice Rand with a medical degree, i.e. the love interest that Picard (or Kirk) could never really have.

Moreover, I couldn't stand Gates McFadden's performance in the role or how the character was written. Crusher got more and more shrewish as time wore on. Q was right when he transfigured her into a yapping dog in "True Q."

"She gets more shrill with each passing year." (Q) Yeah, she did.

Oh wow, she's beautiful!

I didn't care for her much in TNG at all, and I was happy that Crusher returned, explanation or not. But she was definitely a good actress.
