Official Star Trek Week 8 Box Office Thread

SO looking at the potential figures..$250.5 million US and $124.931 million international, for a total of $375.4 million by monday.

Jeri, you and your hubby are amazing.

So, today we should pass $250 mil if the estimates are correct?

Or plaintive, as the case may be.
 Yeah... sheesh, thanks.

Boy, looking at the weeds in my garden this morning after yesterday's rain, I don't know if I will get to the theater after all.

Captain Fine, how many times have you seen the movie now?

Borgminister, I had my same spot staked out when I went, too. It was starting to feel like home.

Well, HE is anyway; he's not even a particular fan. But he can now quote stuff with the best of them.

Those are some nice, round numbers.

Its playing in like 2 theaters on Long Island, both like 90 minutes away from me. So much for a 4th trip.

This is what a typical 12 multiplex is now showing on July 5th Transformers gets 2 screens

My guess is when Potter comes out Transformers loses ones screen and year one is gone, Trek gets to stay.
The Taking of Pelham 123 must be close to being gone too, one showing only per day.

Aw, crap. Well it was inevitable. You always just keep hoping for the next hurdle to be cleared, i.e., Night and Y1. And maybe Pelham.

But there still is this week-long limbo upcoming before HP storms into town, so who knows, maybe one last gasp?

Based off my experiences the only time theaters are ever busy on the 4th of July is if its raining. Otherwise people stay outside and enjoy their bbqs!

And considering those numbers are only weekend estimates I'm hoping Star Trek actually made a bit more.

Also, with Potter on the way I imagine Trek wont be out for much longer. Smaller theaters might be cut for good but with a 30-plex like mine it'll probably go down to 2 or 3 showings a day and will have to share a theater with another movie.

Studio estimate is $1.8M for the weekend. All movies were down on Saturday for the 4th of July holiday.

http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/

That means $249,847,000 guess wait till monday to break $250...I thought more people would go to cinema on 4th this common to be so low ?

When the 4th actually is during the weekend, it hurts the box office since people better things to do than go to the movies.
That, and the weather is better this year on average, gas prices are lower...ergo more people are driving.

Chart?

:p

Well, whatever happens, 250 million domestic and 125 foreign is more than anyone would've surmised.

It would be nice to have one more blip next weekend before HP weighs in, though.

Travel was actually expected to be down 2% this year, according to AAA.

According to AAA, Americans traveling away from home this holiday has dropped to 37 million--a three year low.

That's down almost two percent from this time last year.

The travel club cites the weak economy as one reason more people are opting to stay within 50 miles of their home base this weekend.
But in any case, this was a fairly crappy weekend for the box office.

1. Transformers: ROTF - 42,500,000 - 293,459,000
1. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs - 42,500,000 - 67,506,000
3. Public Enemies - 26,172,000 - 41,044,000
4. The Proposal - 12,779,000 - 94,233,000
5. The Hangover - 10,415,000 - 204,197,000
6. Up - 6,579,000 - 264,873,000
7. My Sister's Keeper - 5,255,000 - 26,964,000
8. The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 - 2,500,000 -58,471,000
9. Year One - 2,100,000 - 38,088,000
9. Night at the Museum 2 - 2,100,000 - 167,763,000
11. Star Trek - 1,815,000 3,711,968 - 249,847,000
12. Away We Go - 1,100,000 - 6,074,000

Trek should pass $250 million tomorrow, or hopefully the estimate is low and it had a better Sunday than predicted.

Transformers 2 should pass $300 million and $600 domestic in the next day or so. Ice Age 3 opened less impressively than Ice Age 2, but already has an additional $150 million internationally (the last one made a ridiculous $650 million worldwide).

Here once again is the list of Top 10 highest-grossing films worldwide of 2009. This is based on the weekend estimates, and some films' foreign grosses are a few days out of date, but it should be reasonably accurate, and I will of course update accordingly as more numbers come in:

1. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Domestic: $293,459,000 / 49.6%
+ Foreign: $298,000,000 / 50.4%
= Worldwide: $591,459,000

2. Angels & Demons
Domestic: $130,725,152 / 27.6%
+ Foreign: $342,100,000 / 72.4%
= Worldwide: $472,825,152

3. Star Trek
Domestic: $249,847,000 / 66.6%
+ Foreign: $125,000,000 / 33.4%
= Worldwide: $374,847,000

4. Night at the Museum : Battle of the Smithsonian
Domestic: $167,763,000 / 45.3%
+ Foreign: $202,300,000 / 54.7%
= Worldwide: $370,063,000

5. Monsters vs. Aliens
Domestic: $196,553,000 / 53.2%
+ Foreign: $172,935,849 / 46.8%
= Worldwide: $369,488,849

6. X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Domestic: $178,358,000 / 49.1%
+ Foreign: $184,600,000 / 50.9%
= Worldwide: $362,958,000

7. Terminator Salvation
Domestic: $122,400,000 / 34.9%
+ Foreign: $228,700,000 / 65.1%
= Worldwide: $351,100,000

8. Fast and Furious
Domestic: $155,054,005 / 44.4%
+ Foreign: $194,138,079 / 55.6%
= Worldwide: $349,192,084

9. Up
Domestic: $264,873,000 / 83.9%
+ Foreign: $50,800,000 / 16.1%
= Worldwide: $315,673,000

10. The Hangover
Domestic: $204,197,000 / 76.9%
+ Foreign: $61,500,000 / 23.1%
= Worldwide: $265,697,000

Also, if anyone's curious, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is climbing pretty fast, already taking the #11 spot on this list from Watchmen. Here are its totals:

Domestic: $67,506,000 / 31.3%
+ Foreign: $148,000,000 / 68.7%
= Worldwide: $215,506,000

Some of these totals are very close, and it's possible some of them might change when the weekend finals are in, resulting in some films switching positions. For instance, Night at the Museum 2 may beat out Trek for the #3 spot when all is said and done... but I hope it doesn't. :p It is looking likely that it will overtake ST eventually, but I guess we'll have to keep watching to find out.

ETA: Some more international figures are coming in, and it looks like I was right about some films switching places -- Terminator Salvation has now passed Fast and Furious to claim the #7 spot. However, I don't have Night at the Museum's updated foreign grosses yet, so I can't say if it's still behind Trek... fingers crossed. ;)

Iron Man took a dive at this point in its run, so even though its a steep drop for Trek this weekend, it is still on track for $257 million.

You see it making 7 million more? Is it in enough theaters in the coming weeks to achieve that?
