Predators Director and Plot Info

It looks like the new Predator film has gotten a new director and we have our first storyline details (From ComingSoon):

The film is directed by Nimrod Antal.

The story will involve people being taken to a Predator controlled planet and being stranded there.

I have to say, the plot of this film is one of the least interesting things I have ever seen related to the Predator franchise, and I've seen better plots from the relatively lackluster tie-in novels and games.

Wasn't Nimrod the hunter?

Yes, Nimrod was a hunter, a very good hunter in fact. Bugs Bunny sarcastically referred to Elmer Fudd as Nimrod once, sarcastically because Fudd is a terrible hunter. However, many people missed the reference, having no idea who Nimrod was, and it was taken by those who did not understand the reference as a generic insult, possibly referring to low intelligence, and slowly entered popular use as such.

As I recall, this was actually the concept for one of the books too. It's been years since I read any of them but I believe one of them involved people being hunted on the planet in the equivalent of an enclosed hunting ground, albeit much larger than some fenced off area.

I'm not exactly jumping for joy with the story so far but it could be much worse. Predator 2 was an excellent concept that failed to deliver and not many people found AVP or AVP2 all that great either. It's almost like the Predator franchise was a fluke success with the first movie.

I'm actually psyched that the story will take place on Yautja! I sincerely hope they will cast athletes as Predators in stead of bodybuilders, as seen in the 2 AvPs...
And I think I may be in the minority of those who enjoyed greatly Predator 2.

like huge, towering MMA fighters? Why no Kevin Peter Hall? Is he even still alive? scratch that i guess he died in 1991

I liked it but it definitely felt inferior to the first one, and did not stand up as well to being a sequel as Aliens did to Alien. Although Alien and Aliens were virtually nothing alike, they both still succeed well as being in the same universe and being easily connected. Predator and Predator 2 just felt too disconnected to me.

Maybe if there'd been a cameo by Dutch or something tying them more closely together it would have worked. Instead we get a few comments and remarks about the "previous incident" and then all but forget they ever occured. I'm not saying a cameo would've done it (in fact it might have made it worse) but had we gotten some kind of stronger link between the two, it may have worked better.

Oh, and I don't count Elpidia Carrillo's character bonking the crime lord as a cameo either, even if she was also named Anna.

Predators will have to stand on it's own. I'm kind of hoping it does. It needs to be either a complete restart or seperation from the previous two movies or they need something firmer to tie the two movies into this one that doesn't come off contrived.

If Nimrod sucks reviews will surely read: "Predators director Nimrod Antol was aptly named as only a true nimrod could direct a movie of such banality and...." I mean the review writes itself.

I have to admit the idea of a Robert Rodriguez produced Predator movie spurred me to order P1 and 2 as well as Avp2. I just wish he could have directed the movie. He's truly one of the finest action directors of our time.

This sounds much better than the pirate idea I heard about a couple of months back. About Predator 2, I enjoyed it. I thought it would suck, but when I watched it I was pleasantly surprised. Though it isn't as good as the first one, it is by no means an insult to the franchise. I think P2 erred in the 'futurstic' stuff for 1997. The guns and silver suits looked hokey even back when the movie was made. I also thought Danny Glover cursed way too much.

I guess this means that the AVP franchise is over? It's a shame that no one thought to put Bill Paxton in one of the AVP films. That would've been awesome.

They probably are keeping a third AVP movie open for a future time. I can only hope they get it right when they do.

Actually, those suits are used when scientists get lava samples from volcanoes, so those aren't anything new. I don't know about the liquid nitrogen guns though.

Why don't they just use the comic as a reference? It was superior to what we've seen so far, IMO anyway.

The comic of AvP? Maybe budgetary reasons. Cheaper to shoot in a maze that can be confined to a few soundstages or in Texas than to create a whole space colony. It's not like the Alien or Predator movies were such huge blockbusters that they merited huge budgets. From what I understand AvP was the biggest hit either franchise had.

Of course if you meant the Predator comics I have to say that the original inspiration for P2, Concrete Jungle by the wonderful Mark Verheiden was faaaaar superior to the Danny Glover version. First time I read that book I thought that Dolph Lundgren and Bob Hoskins would be great as Schaef and Rasche. Course that was twenty yeras ago.

Which comic? Some the ones I've read aren't that great (the one where a samurai kills Predators because their blood keeps him alive comes to mind) and it would be nice to see a Predator story that focuses more on the Predator than the humans (which would be really hard).
