Weekend 8 Numbers - Star Trek #8 - $3.6 million - $246.2 million

This is one of those times that it's nice to be proven wrong. And to be able to say "shove it" to all the haters :)

Well, the fact that Transformers trounced Star Trek in only about 1/14th the theater time - with a Rottentomatoes rating of 21% - should put an end to the argument that big box office results = good movie.

Another 2 movies are coming within the next 4-5 years... aren't you happy?

I sure am. To combine near universal critical acclaim with top 5 for 2009 box-office numbers is a great accomplishment.

Star Trek has a future again... Engage.

Can I assume you're referring to Tranformers haters too, since it's doing so well?

That remains to be seen... ask me again once I've seen those movies and I'll tell you whether they made me happy or not. This one passed the time, but I really feel it was a missed opportunity.

Fair enough. I'll just go watch it again July 1st at my local IMAX--a real screen and superb sound.

The opportunity you speak of was created by this very movie, which is what makes it so special IMO.

There now can be future movies that cover those final frontiers with the introductions out of the way.

One thing's for sure though, whatever the story, it has to remain "popcorn" enough for the masses to come. Lord help us if it becomes pedantic a la Nemesis (which I liked too), because that'll be all she wrote.

I'm patiently waiting for the $250 million mark. I didn't think it will make it, but now I remain optimistic.

It will definitely make it now. It should get to $248 million after Thursday (assuming a 25% drop from last week for Mon-Thurs). And another $2 million is pretty easy next weekend since the film has been dropping around 35% on weekends.

Its sad Trek got passed by another Pixar crapfest. Pixar films are the most overrated films in Hollywood

The family and little kid advantage always helps these films

I couldn't disagree more. WALL-E is one of the best science fiction films I have seen in a long, long time.

It wasn't so long ago that $250 million was pretty much universally declared improbable around here.

I never doubted it. :bolian:

I've got to make sure one of my local theaters will still be playing it over the July 4th weekend. I still want to get in at least one more showing.

Big boxoffice result = good movie has never been a good argument. But if a movie makes $250 million and has a 95% rottentomatoes rating then it has a pretty good argument for being a good movie. But ultimately it's our own opinion that matters.
I like this one. :)

I said $160 million...I also said it wouldn't hit $250 million...argh
That's ok; we're in pretty much uncharted territory around here -- especially with Squiggy gone. ;)

Not bad for a country with a population of 21,829,372.
[Dot Matrix]"Not bad for Rambo!"[/Dot Matrix] ;)

You are a trooper. I'm trying to decide if I stop here, at 20 times. Saturday we drove 30 minutes to a theater where it was still playing, and my husband found the seats there painful. So, I don't know if I'll be going again.

My IMAX will have it SOON so I'll be going 2-3 more times, wife permitting... ;)
I am really happy for you! :) My husband has been incredible; he's never been a particular Star Trek fan, and he's gone with me probably 15 times. I'm beginning to wonder, in fact, whether perhaps I only have six months to live, and nobody's told me.

Star Trek is a fun summer movie with big explosions and loud sound effects but suffers from minimal character development and a ridiculous storyline that is filled with plot holes. However, it did accomplish the main goal of appealing a bit more to the masses and therefore making the franchise viable again.

Pixar creates some of the finest films made, animated or otherwise, by focusing first and foremost on character development instead of relying solely on special effects. Of course, the main demographic are children but it does appeal to adults by providing smart, witty stories.

I would suggest you view Ratatouille, which I believe is a work of art.

^^ True that.

Now, if only Pixar would create a Star Trek movie, even I would be thrilled with it ;). But at least I have John Carter of Mars to look forward to from them, at long, long last ... (okay, Disney, but it's still Andrew Stanton of Pixar spearheading the thing, which is what's important).
