Can I read ST: Destiny...

I hadn't read any Star Trek novels for quite a while when I picked up ST: Destiny. I read the trilogy with the mindset that I was catching up with some of the characters from the spinoff series years after they'd gone off the air and seeing what they were up to "now." It worked pretty well that way.

(Oddly, I also found myself imagining the story in comic book form; it was pretty neat that way too!)

...without having read any of the other Relaunch stuff? As it stands, I've only read the first two Titan books, and nothing else. But I have the Destiny trilogy sitting on my shelf right now, calling out to me.

Should I wait until I get some of the other books, or can I read this without being too confused?

You should probably at least read Greater Than the Sum. It introduces several new characters that Destiny just kind of assumes you're familiar with.

Not only would it be okay to skip Resistance and Before Dishonor, it's actually a very good idea if you value your will to live.

Yes, I'm exaggerating. Slightly.

Also, if you haven't read the DS9 relaunch, there's a certain DS9 character whose new job will definitely make you go :wtf:.

Here is the list for what to read before the Destiny Trilogy and what order to read them based on the timelines of each book. This list does go a little past Destiny as well.

A Time for War, A Time for Peace
Death in Winter
Taking Wing
The Red King
Articles of the Federation
Orion’s Hounds
Resistance
Q & A
Sword of Damocles
Before Dishonor
Greater than the Sum
Destiny: Gods of Night
Destiny: Mere Mortals
Destiny: Lost Souls
A Singular Destiny
Full Circle
Over A Torrent Sea
Losing the Peace

I would suggest placing "Losing the Peace" after "Lost Souls". :)

I would keep Losing the Peace just where it is in case it mentions anything that happens in the ones before it and Destiny.

I read Destiny without having read any of the novels that lead into it, and I really enjoyed it, more so than any Star Trek novel by a wide margin since the early DS9 relaunch novels. A general knowledge of, and immersion in, 24th century Trek is more important than familiarity with the relaunch novels themselves, in my view.

I've since gone back through a lot of the prior material and found it for the most part relatively forgettable or at times downright silly, so I would go so far as to recommend going straight to Destiny unless you have a lot of time on your hands, or are truly a model of patience.

If you hunger for more at the end of Destiny, "A Singular Destiny" is an intriguing, low-key follow-up, and you can always go back to the earlier material. It's a mixed bag, but there's some good stuff there. "Greater Than the Sum" stood out for me.

Losing the Peace, A Singular Destiny, and Full Circle all end within a week of each other, and everything but the prologue of Over a Torrent Sea takes place significantly later. So at the very least, LtP should come before OaTS. Chronologically, it mostly takes place before ASD, but not entirely. There are some minor cross-references among the four post-DES books, but they're more teasers than spoilers.

I haven't read a Star Trek novel since the mid-late 90s, but I've just picked up these Destiny books.

The note at the front of the book says Losing the Peace happens after the final Destiny book but before A Singular Destiny.

On a peronal note, I read the Destiny Trilogy without having read any of the books on that list before hand, and had no trouble following anything.

Well, since no trip to the city for new books seemed to be forthcoming, I started reading these. Almost done the first book, and I'm totally loving it so far!!! :)

That is the revised list. Yes it is a big list, but it's a good list and one that if read in order will be more enjoyable then skipping around.

oops. Too late. I'll add that to the list of books I get next, though.

Meaning Articles, as per the original post you had up. lol

I highly recommend getting any of the books in my list that you do not have and reading them all in order.

Slightly undermining JWolf's authority, I'd second his recommendation for reading through the list, with one exception. I found "Before Dishonor" a bit of a wallbanger, as did many others (there were those who liked it, of course) and I would suggest possibly skipping that one. "Greater Than the Sum" and "Full Circle" will fill you in on the events of "BD" well enough. I would note that I suggesting a Trek book be skipped is a very rare occurrance, so that should convey my disappointment with "BD". I agree reading through all the others will be very pleasing, though :)

If one book should be skipped from that list it should be Greater than the Sum IMO, the worst book of the 24th Century build-up to Destiny by a long shot.

What? "Greater than the Sum" is fantastic! I would suggest "Before Dishonour" is by far the worst, the others all being very good. "Greater Than the Sum" is a contender for my favourite book on that list :)

Yay! Let the big argument commence!
