Ron Moore's Virtuality on tonight

Shit. I just watched it and really liked it.

So there really is no hope for this being picked up by anyone else since FOX is being idiotic as usual ? :(

Well in the VR, and in the ship in general.
Since the VR is their only escape in this 10 year journey, they need to be able to use it. And I'm assuming the computer is to blame for the "death".

One thing the pilot establishes in that respect is that the VR was originally designed to better run the ship's systems, and we saw an example of this when the XO used the VR to load the nukes into the ion drive. So even if they cut off recreational use (which I don't see happening now that they've lost their authority figure--even if the M.D. and the psychologist told them all to cut it, I'm sure quite a few of them would still be sneaking in sessions), they still have to deal with the fact that it's tied into the ship's system, and has perhaps 'invaded' the onboard computer. Certainly, it could blow them all to hell just by screwing with the program the next time they try to detonate more nukes, which is as complete a threat as possible.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

It doesn't really apply to this show since the supposed "earth's in danger" scenario didn't happen/get made up until after they were in space, but with these "we're saving the world by going into space" plots, shouldn't they send more than one ship out just in case? Hell, they sent two in Armageddon.

P.S.: I knew I recognized Jean's(the ship AI) voice, it's Kari Wahlgren who did the voice of Ashe (Final Fantasy XII) and Elika (latest Prince of Persia). ;)

Heh I thought i heard that voice somewhere, thanks for noting that.

Was interesting to watch, would be interesting to see if it ever goes anywhere, and even if it does, it should be a small run. I would continue to check it out if it gets picked up.

And, since Michael Taylor wrote the teleplay and co-wrote the story with Moore, I think it's probably safe to give him more of the credit than Moore this time around.

Taylor and Moore are real talents so I'm not surprised it sounds like it was good.

Yea, nothing like hand loading the nukes for precision timed detonations. It was my only wtf moment of the episode science wise. What they couldn't come up with, I don't know, a cartridge system for the nuclear bullets?

1.81 million viewers...

Is that FOX's fault?

I have it recorded, but don't know if it makes sense to watch it given that it is intended as a pilot and will leave many unanswered questions.

Plus the 12 minutes I viewed at trekmovie seemed plodding, and that shakey cam didn't help.

Partially it could be. Looks like there wasn't much advertising, and it was dumped on a Friday night in the summer. But they obviously had no confidence in the show in the first place.

There'd be no point in watching anything if you were worried there'd be unanswered questions.

I think the whole "we're going to another planet" is a larger VR program...that's why Pike realized...they are inside the game, they just don't know it.

Ah, well...it woulda been an interesting show.

It is largely Fox's fault.

A barely advertised pilot aired on a Friday summer night.
And a pilot that it was previously known that it wouldn't lead to a series.
It was never given a chance.

Who would tune in ?

Well now that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is 0-for-2 when it comes to starrring in TV shows, maybe he can find out of Aaron Eckhart has any movie projects that require a brother character.

The FOX treatment really is an insult to him. New Amsterdam was amazing and now they basically fucked him AGAIN in another decent show.

I don't know, who tuned in for the X-Files?

I mean, just because a show is "good" doesn't mean it makes it on any night. WOM is also important--witness Star Trek the movie.

New Amsterdam was a decent show, I agree.

But it is about ratings, plain and simple.

I can't say i remember what day and time slot the X-Files pilot aired or how it was advertised.:)

But in the case of Virtuality, FOX had pretty much made known before it aired that it would lead nowhere, it wouldn't be picked up.
Or at least that's what I've read.

You yourself said you don't know if it makes sense to watch it given that it is intended as a pilot and will leave many unanswered questions.

They could have at least kept quiet about that and see how it did.

I don't suppose we know for certain that they didn't - but that's for the sake of argument; you've got a point. One thing that they did stress a little was the enormous cost of this mission, and I'm thinking that the numbers they mentioned would be vast underestimates to what something like this would really cost. The world economy might be incapable of supporting one such, much less multiples.

How cool was the chick singing "The Munsters" theme in Japanese?

And how cliche but realistic that the computer nerd fantasized about being a rock star.

My theory is the AI Killer was really a benevolent alien who was acting to make sure the ship decided to head onto Eridani to make contact with him so he could give them the means of saving Earth. He just had some really bizarre thoughts on his M.O. And when he "killed" the captain he was really just ascending him into his higher consciousness.

No.
