Gotta agree with this. I didn't loathe the film the way you did, Warped, but this is definitely a point I agree with.

You forgot TAS. Many purist TOS fans detested the idea of Saturday morning Star Trek, despite the fact that it created many new ST fans (me included), who went on to discover TMP and TOS.
And you forgot the CGI-enhanced remastered TOS, in both syndication and on DVD/HD/Blu-Ray. Many purist ST fans detested the idea of that, too.
You know, when I entered ST fandom, as a wide-eyed newbie in 1980, I was constantly told exactly the same things about my (still) favourite movie of all time: "Star Trek: The Motion Picture". And, surprise, surprise, over the last ten or so years that movie has actually grown on people, so that it's no longer detested and ridiculed the way it used to be.
My second favourite movie of all time is probably... JJ's "Star Trek".

I can't possibly take any of that seriously. Their warp drive is definitely offline.

"I don't like it" does not mean the exact same thing as "it's not good," much as some folks like to confuse the two.
Although it could very well mean the same thing, too, Dennis. And besides, I thought most posters around here maintain that the fans' opinions are irrelevant regardless.
That said, I enjoyed the film -- perhaps not as much as if it had been a "true" prequel, but it maintained the basic spirit of Star Trek without doing too much to assault my love of TOS. It could have been a smarter story, and it could just as easily been set in a world that aesthetically more closely matched TOS and told virtually the same tale. (I'm still not sure how a 20th century brewery is somehow a more convincing view of the future than anything presented in TOS.) All the Trek films since TWOK have needed an infusion of excitement moreso than reimagining, and that no doubt is this film's greatest strength.
That is certainly often the intention of the speaker. Generally, however, it's only the former meaning that really has any authority; after all, as you also point out the success of this kind of film is not determined by the relatively few who are really strongly invested in it. Most people who've seen the film, including the majority of professional reviewers, clearly do think it's a good film (they like it). There's no evidence that the hard-core fans who insist that it's a bad movie have any appreciation of films that's superior to the public-at-large; they're simply more attached to oldTrek.
I think it is useful to have an idea of what percentage of posters like/disliked it.
