Following Your Dream..

Plecostomus

Commodore
For years my wife has talked about starting or owning a restaurant. She's talked about either starting from scratch or buying a franchise or something like that. Thing is it's always been "someday."

Recently she had an operation to remove a cancer-riddled leg. Well that went ok, but it left her kind of depressed.

About two weeks ago she decided that she was going to empty her bank account and buy out the diner that her mother and father operate here in town.

As of Wednesday she quit her job at Soulless Insurance Contract Komany (S.I.C.K.) and took full ownership.

Never seen her so happy. Now she has a staff of 20 to manage, an established client-base to feed and hundreds of bold and innovative recipe ideas to torment my gastrointestinal system.

It's a Greek-American themed diner. Mornings they serve truck-driver breakfasts (huge omelets with heaps of homefries... 12 kinds of omelets), pancakes and other standard breakfast. Lunch to 3pm it's all burgers and sandwiches and fries. Night it turns into "fine dining" with greek themed dinners, American dinners and whatever specials the cook comes up with. They also have a wee bar and a huge-ass wine-cellar.

Been there for over 25 years, and on Fridays there is a two hour wait to be seated. So it's doing quite well even in the slow economy.

We were both commenting that I'll have to moderate my intake of leftovers, just because I can eat two fish-fries a doner kabob sandwich and spanakopita doesn't mean I should be eating that much.

In other news I setup wifi access there this morning you can now surf the net from your wifi enabled thingy for the price of a meal. Cheapest meal is a tuna-steak sandwich with a glass of wine @ $2.10 tax included.

She asked me just a few moments ago to write down some of my seafood recipes and figure out if it's possible to scale up my Classic Clambake to feed 1,500 customers.

...can you tell we are having fun with this? :D

YAY! It really sound slike a lot of fun, I can imagine that it can be hell at some times but I'd do it as well ^_^ Pictures of the restaurant pretty please?

Eventually. I'm sitting here trying to make heads or tails of this Point Of Sale system. Yes, I did RTFM already. ;)

I'm so happy for you and your wife. Sounds like you have earned a happy event like this. :)

This diner sounds the business - the price you quoted for a sandwich and wine is amazing - couldn't get a simple sandwich for that here, let alone wine to boot.

I want to try a trucker's breakfast - sounds decadently unhealthy!

Now I call that a bargain. :D

I guess it goes to show that following your heart's desire can pay off and become something worthwhile. :bolian:

Oh, and you'll have to set up a TrekBBS meet-up there at some point. ;)

Wow! I'd like me one of those breakfasts! And with wi-fi, I'd be in heaven. I'd never leave :)

Congrats and good luck to Mrs Pleco! Sounds like just the thing she needs to do right now.

(As an aside, has she changed her username, I couldn't find her in the members list any more.)

Her account is still active she just doesn't use it that often. Maybe she'll log on this afternoon. She's doing paperwork over there (points) while I figure out the Point Of Sale system.

You know, that's actually not such a bad idea. If you could get people to pay a dollar to get some excersise, the general population in the surrounding area plus the truckers visiting the place would be much more healthier...

I'm obviously failing my searching rolls today then. Get her to post in this thread and say hi!

Sounds like the two of you are having a good day :)

...and for those of you wondering that Tuna Sandwich consists of:

seasoned tuna-steak on either white wheat rye french bread pita hard roll onion roll or potato bread with your choice of cheese, greens, slice of tomato and dressing of your choice. Served with a pickle and handful of chips. Wine is a glass of Chateau De Pissant Ze Carpet... comes in 50 gallon drums. ;)

And it's still a whole lot of a better deal than the tuna sandwiches we get in the local supermarket. Cheaper too. :bolian:

Maybe they could build a gym in the back. We could go get some exercise while lunch is cooking!

Ingenious. We could spend all day eating like pigs, then all night working out, so we could start again the following day. We could be the mascots of the place or something - a little zoo of pigs in the back.

Even better, the treadmills and weights could be connected to a system which converts some of the kinetic energy back into electrical energy and channels it back into the local grid, so you could theroetically be powering the grill which cooks your lunch. :bolian:
