Britain- remembering the mid 1990s

This is a thread dedicated to remembering Great Britain in the years 1994-1996

I was watching an episode of Peep Show the other day, where Jez is speaking of his uni days "Oh I have a degree my friend. I was there in the glory years- mid 90s. Britpop was kicking off, Four Weddings had just come out. It was mental"

Yet I would agree, Britain in the mid 90s was fookin awesome!
At least how I remember it. For the record I was born in 1984 and thus was only 10-12 in the years 1994-1996, but I still have so many great memories of that era. Maybe it sticks in my mind as it was the milestone time of going from Primary School to Secondary School.

Off the top of head, memories from that time-

The whole Britpop era of Oasis, Blur, Pulp, etc
Oasis vs Blur, the battle to end all battles. Blur won the battle for the Number 1, but Oasis went on to destroy them with the album
Whigfield – Saturday Night
Wet Wet Wet – Love is All Around (At number one for about forever)
The Fast Show- making its hilarious debut
The Big Breakfast- watching in the morning before school, days of Chris Evans & Gabby Roslin presenting
Outhere Brothers – Boom Boom Boom
Michael Jackson – Earth Song
Rednex – Cotton Eye Joe
Goldeneye- Pierce Brosnan arriving as the new James Bond
Trainspotting
Spice Girls- making their debut and becoming HUGE
Euro 96- not really a big football fan myself, but I remember how this really overtook the nation, with the below song being heard everywhere you went. Culminating in the infamous Gareth Southgate incident
Lightning Seeds, Baddiel & Skinner – Three Lions
TFI Friday- Perfect Friday night fodder. Chris Evans and Wiiiiiiiiil
Babylon Zoo – Spaceman
The Prodigy – Firestarter
Chemical Brothers – Setting Sun (Chemical Brothers + Noel Gallagher= no bad thing)

Michael Jackson vs Jarvis Cocker!

Mad for it!
So to fellow Brits I invite you to share your memories, good or bad, things you loved or hated, music, film, TV, politics, news, etc from that special (to me anyway) era!

Listening to Three Lions now. As I said I'm not a football fan, but this song is frakking awesome. Really brings back memories and gets you going!
Excellent pissed pub anthem

Ah, the mid-90s. :)

You've pretty much summed up most of the major points there, Ethros.

For me, I was in secondary school, had my first series of crushes (naturally which never worked out), and was mired in exams and music competitions and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. I even spent the summer of 96 (the year of Euro disappointement and Atlanta hilarity) in central England for a bit. Good times overall.

Also:

John Major's power was weakening in a mire of sleaze, and some upstart punk shadow home secretary called Tony Blair was bigging-up nuLabour with his toothy smile (admittedly nowhere near as bad as his wife's).

It was a truly Manic time, the time of The Holy Bible and Everything Must Go, and the disappearance of Richey in between.

In F1, we all also rooted for Damon Hill, Johnny Herbert, David Coulthard, and to a lesser extent Martin Brundle, and sneered at that Schumacher fellow.

Man United won almost everything in England, Rangers won almost everything in Scotland.

Grand Theft Auto proudly put violent controversial Scottish videogaming on the map.
Tomb Raider made us proud to be English, upper-class, and unfeasibly proportioned.
Cannon Fodder proved war had never been so much fun.

It was the era of This Life, Our Friends in the North, and the Glam Metal Detectives. Oh, and of course The High Life (arguably the finest Scottish sitcom since Rab C). :bolian:

And of course, it was the era that gave us Father Ted.

Good times overall.

Jarvis won my undying respect that day
Video of it

Ha, been a while since I've seen that. And Jacko's bloody miming too.
Remember when the BRIT Awards were actually interesting? Was it 1998 when Chumbawamba soaked John Prescott?

btw, Three Lions, not getting old yet after multiple listens :)
I'd love to go back to that era the age I am now, and fully aprreciate it.

^ Ah, Three Lions! I thought (and still think) the video is hilarious. Prejudice can be so much fun. :D

Still, I was more interested in the US at that time. But I did watch the Euro Cup. My first and the most exciting finale I've watched ever since.

Mid-90s nostalgia isn't "my thing" to be honest. The summer of 1996 was very memorable though, esp. Euro 96. Great tournament and England's Holland and Germany games are probably two of the most memorable matches (for opposing reasons) I've ever seen.

The screencap from the Big Breakfast reminds me what a fox Gaby Roslin was. Top pair of legs to wake up to in the morning. :D

Speaking of former presenters of The Big Breakfast, the mid 90s were also the golden age of Have I Got News For You. [Shame on you, Ravescene, you sperm of the Devil, you... - everyone] What, too soon?

One such classic moment: Hislop vs. Morgan
From slightly earlier in the decade: Merton's finest hour :guffaw:

Good grief, the mid-90s are nostalgia now? :rommie:

The Nineties mostly sucked, and were just a prelude to the even suckier Naughties....

Personally, I'm too lazy to ever figure out the codes, and just type foreign languages without any accents. Laziness is timeless.
