Size Of The New Enterprise (large images)

I thought it was great that this film left loads of stuff vague, for fans to come to their own conclusions about.
This thread has taught me that when Trekkies are left alone with un-quantified data they go mad. This circular argument will continue forever. One day wars will be fought over how big this Enterprise is.

Truly, "they fight their wars with computers."

Trekkies don't go mad, we are naturally mad since the moment of conception. Threads like this is just our way of expressing our madness.

Somebody on Startrekmovie.com asked me to put together some comparison shots with the Enterprise at 366 meters with a modern aircraft carrier. I scaled it against the next, latest line of US Aircraft Carrier CVN-78 Gerald R. Ford (The newest most advanced next line of Aircraft Carrier measuring in at 1092 ft / 333m) Big ship...

First lets get a side ortho (I placed tiny to scale figures on the aircraft carrier and the Enterprise for scale reference, they look like tiny little dots. Everytime you see one of those dots standing on the hull, that is actually two figures standing side by side)
enterprises366comparedtomodernai-2.jpg

Top ortho view (once again figures are visible) Its amazing how small the fighters are compared to the ship. Suddenly the "tiny" shuttlebay doesn't look that tiny anymore

Elevation..

As you can see, the Enterprise even at 366 meters is incredibly large. It has far more area than an Aircraft carrier and the Aircraft Carrier has far more crew..

Now lets look at the aircraft carrier compared to other Trek ships..

And lets see what it would look like with a 725 meter Enterprise..

The carrier can practically drive into the shuttlebay from the looks of it. By the way, both of these images are to scale with each other so you can see how big the 700 meter plus ship is compared to the Galaxy and Sovereign.

I threw in one more shot to show the size difference between the original Enterprise, the Refit, and the JJprise (at 366m)

Top ortho with a 366 meter ship and a 725 meter ship...carrier is 333 meters
(tiny dots are actually two people)
enterprisesbigtop.jpg

This reminds me of a scene from Zoolander...

JJ Abrams: How can they travel through space if they can't even fit in the ship!?
What is it interstellar travel for ants? It needs to be at least...3 times this big!

ILM: He's right make it bigger

Your images aren't really making a point. They don't favor either scale; except that the smaller enterprise "feels" good to you. Well, the larger one "feels" good to me, so that's that. :D

That's your opinion, that's cool:) They are really meant more for humor and real world comparison showing the scale of these ships. The 366 meter ship doesn't "feel" good to me, this is the size the ship was made at originally and scaled up from there. I only compared the size it was designed with against a real world example. I didn't just pull a size out of my hat.

This does show that the shuttle bay is too small. Take some airplanes off the carrier and line them up inside the shuttle bay on both sides (superimpose them) and see how much room you really have. I don't think they'll fit stacked in there much less allow for and landing room down the middle.

If the secondary hull did not taper down as it does it would have enough room. But the tapering down makes the shuttle bay too narrow.

Oh, then I misinterpreted. My apologies. :)

It's all good, no worries:) Thanks

Where did you get those fantastic orthos from? Obviously not officially, but they seem to be the most accurate yet. Are there any hi-res?

Wow, that is ridiculously huge. Thanks for posting that - it's nice to see a real-world example for comparison for a change.

Methinks that if they had a problem with the shuttlebay, they should've made the shuttles smaller, or not require that 20 or so be able to park in it, rather that blow the Enterprise up to Ludicrous Size.

And aircraft carrier hosts about 5,000 people, if I'm not mistaken. The NuEnterprise must have a crew of several thousand.

I don't suppose you have a football field overlay you could put as the background to that image? Maybe a wallpaper of repeating football fields? :)

So that puts us at roughly 2,396 feet (730 metres). Sounds fine to me.

Let's put this to bed, yeah?

Seems about right.

Interesting thing - I have the nice plastic model with all the lights and sounds - great fun - but next to my Ent-E model of roughly the same size it looks about right, suggesting the two are pretty close in scale.

Please report the scale measurements printed upon each box...

Haha - sadly I threw out the box for the Ent-E (I have no collecting bones in my body) and the nu-Ent has nothing so pleasing as a scale for my good friends here.

It does look BIG though, the torpedo launchers are sort of scaled down, and the huge shuttlebay looks small. The design is clearly supposed to be a very large ship.

BTW - whichever bugger mentioned cheese on toast you made me hungry - knock it off! ;)
