Is the term "British" offensive?

We are not European. We cannot be placed in the same group as those located on the mainland, the differences are much much greater for us. The differences are so great it would be like saying a Chinese person is European.

No. That's just not true.

In fact, it's obviously not true.

And that final claim--the bit about China--is just preposterous. What a foolish thing to say.

Can we assume then using his logic that anyone living on an European island should not consider themselves Europeans.

Yes. If you can call it "logic."

Sicilians--not European.

Cretans--not European.

Sardinians and Corsicans--not European.

Irish--not European.

In fact, by Tachyon Shield's logic, the capital of Denmark is not located in Europe. It is, after all, on the islands of Zealand and Amager.

trekkiedane might be surprised to discover that so many of his countrypeople are non-Europeans.

I am of British origin (mainly English) yet my surname is of Scandanavian origin like many people in Britain.

The whole British language is littered with words of Scandanavian and other foreign origins which goes to show that many, many British people have non-Celtic blood running thorough their veins.

Are you sure the majority of Brits would agree with you on this one?

Yes, they'd also agree they need abolishing and should be put up in a council house and made to work at the local fruit and veg factory.

Of course you have a link to back that one up.

I'm not backing nothing up, you either take my word for it or you don't, i'm really not bothered either way.

My stance on the matter has been made clear. Let's not dwell on it.

I live in Britain. Why should I take your word that you know the opinion of the majority of our countrymen?

No they don't. Our Royal family would be a good indication of this.

The UK, it's society, culture and identity are not one and the same with the Royal Family.

Correct. It's a homogeneous mass of people that all love each other; no one from the south of the island would ever talk bad about any northerner or vice versa... Yeah right, and if you believe that: I happen to have an Eiffel tower for sale -cheap! -You interested?

Listen, I don't care. Move on with the thread, don't dwell on my opinion. PLEASE! It will only end in tears.

I'm not feeling particularly teary to be honest. Do you want me to move on because you are incapable of backing up your premise beyond 'it's what I think'?

I wonder if the people of Iceland object to being called European?
They voted to become a member of the European Union, so I'd guess not.

yes, but Tachyon Shield's country is part of the European Union and he is saying his not European.
Anti EU sentiment is popular in Europe it seems. We have it here as well in the Netherlands. Don't know why, because a stronger Europe benefits us all.

No, I want you to move on because i've got a few years experience with this board that when people start focusing their attentions on my opinions in a thread the thread gets ruined and I don't want that to happen to this thread. I gave my opinion now i'm finished. Good day.
