De Kelley's Pinkie Ring

Shatmandu

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Hiya, folks.

What's the story with De Kelley's pinkie ring? I've always wondered.

Joe, noted Trek historian

I thought it was his grandmother's ruby ring. But I'm not sure.

I could be his secret decoder ring or the ring that holds the ultimate power of the universe....

According to the bio that came out in 2005, it was his mom's wedding ring. He started to wear it after she died. When he was cast in Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry wanted his to take it off since "there is no jewelery in Starfleet". Kelley responded by saying "No ring, no DeForrest". Gene gave in.

Setting the stage for Ro Laren, of course...

I'd be happy to assume that it was McCoy's wedding band from when he was married, and he couldn't quite bear to take it off forever.

I laughed because crusher disciple came along and asked "so does anybody know about the ring" -- right after you had explained it, then you replied to him/her that you had no idea...after you just explained it. Am I missing something? No I went back and checked...that's what happened.

I stand by my :guffaw:

What I explained was what I read about DEFORREST KELLEY's reason for wearing the ring. What Crusher disciple then asked was if there was a reason why MCCOY wore the ring. I was talking about real life, she was asking about In-universe.

Two different things.

In Star Trek (2009), the line originally was, "...got the whole damn planet in the divorce, and all I got are my bones...and this ring."

It was deleted for pacing, and also McCoy's new nickname for the reboot, "Bone Ring", just sounded too suggestive.
