Destroying Tornadoes

But that leads to the follow up question. Is it really that good of an idea to go messing around with nature? Do we truly believe that we are knowledgable and wise enough to understand any and all possible consequences? I'm not saying we shouldn't try, I'm just saying the question needs to be asked.

look at the progress made in the last 100 years compared to the previous 100 years.

it is exponential.

of course we are wise and smart.

we are men.we have beaten every other life form.

we are masters of the planet.no other species can touch us.

we are the winners of evolution.

we can do what we like with impunity.

no one can stop us.no one.

we are not slaves to nature...cowering ...cowering in terror at lightening and thunder.

i quote a famous writer paraphrased by me.

Not to go on all-fours; that is the Law. Are we not Men? “Not to cower in terror..not to be afraid...not suck up foul Drink; that is the Law. Are we not Men? “Not to eat live Fish or Flesh; that is the Law. Are we not Men? “Not to claw the Bark of Trees; that is the Law. Are we not Men? “Not to chase other Men; that is the Law. Are we not Men?”

We need to stand up and beat nature.control it...subjugate it to our purpose.

not to be cowed by it.

i dare say in a few hundred years at the current rate of increasing progress we may attain godhood ourselves.

Exterminating other life forms with no regard for the consequences is neither wise nor smart. And it does not prove that we understand anything.

we are masters of the planet.no other species can touch us.

Mosquitoes.

we are the winners of evolution.

The common cold has us beat there.

we can do what we like with impunity.

no one can stop us.no one.

When the aliens land, boy are you in for a surprise!

The guys you're quoting devolved back to animals right after they said that.

Are we not Men?

WE ARE DEVO!

BLASPHEMY! You're lucky I don't cast you out, or smite you, or something.

Seriously dude, I thought you said you weren't arrogant.

Clearly, you've never actually read the book that speech is from, or you'd realize that the quoted speech, in its proper context, along with the rest of the novel, is in direct conflict with the rest of your post.

Wells' "Island of Dr. Moreau" is a story about the arrogance and dangers of man riding roughshod over nature. Of the arrogance of man trying to subdue nature, and bend it to his will. Of the horrific problems and backlash that such anti-nature meddling invariable causes.

It's a warning to mankind about the folly of doing the very types of things you've proposed doing in this thread. It's a warning that people who think like you do are dangerous, and must be stopped.

Since we're quoting fictional characters, I'll leave you with the words of Professor Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park.

What is so great about discovery? It is a violent, penetrative act that scars what it explores. What you call discovery, I call the rape of the natural world.

Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could do something, that they didn't stop to think if they should.
And a pertainent paraphrase:
If there is one thing history has taught us it's that life/nature will not be contained. Life/nature breaks free, expands to new territory, and crashes through barriers, painfully, maybe even dangerously.

Look at the progress made in the last 100 years compared to the previous 100 years. it is exponential.
I know that:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technological_singularity

It happens for a reason, and it has a cost. Think about it.

of course we are wise and smart.

we are men.we have beaten every other life form.
With what? A stick? Mmm, way to go. We'drive species to extinction, and we don't know the consequences. Think about it.

we are masters of the planet.no other species can touch us.

we are the winners of evolution.
No. If evolution is your thing, you should realise we're still evolving. And with our healthand physical issues, we could vwery werll be breeding ourselves out of existence. That's a bigger, long-term worry than tornadoes. Think about it.

we can do what we like with impunity.

no one can stop us.no one.

we are not slaves to nature...cowering ...cowering in terror at lightening and thunder.

This... whole... thing... made me laugh out loud.

Best Comedy Thread EVAR!

You told us you're afraid of big storms. I'm willing to bet you'd quail before tigers or other big cats if they were stalking you. I know I would.

Man is barely master of himself, let alone anything yet. I think Mankind is actually a kind of cancer, running berserk across the surface of the planet, completely stuffing up the existing macroenvironment.

Which is not to say Mankind shouldn't/doesn't have a higher purpose or a better calling, but right now we're destroying the very place that keeps us alive. It's like going into a spaceship and breaking up the air scrubbers and oxygen tanks.

Dude, I'm beginning to think you're a comedy act. If not... that's just sad.

Do yourself a favour, like I did when I was 11 or 12: get an encyclopaedia (World Book's a really good starting point), and read though one volume a week. Not every article, not every day, just skim though a volume, picking up stuff.

Then get back to us. And, to say it again, think about it.

"A tiger stalking me?".i would shoot it with a gun.a simple device which was invented by man.Tigers are already dying out as they cannot compete with Man.

I never said I was afraid of storms per se..I said tornadoes kill people and damage property.I am only afraid of the noise and the havoc and threat to my existence they pose.

I don't understand why everyone keeps saying respect "nature".

it has no existence.their is no such thing.

it is simply the generic blind forces of chance drive by the laws of physics.

we don't need these other animals.survival of the fittest determines if they stay or go.

look at the vast steller explosions destroying nearby worlds.no doubt some of them have life on them...the universe does not care a hoot.

but you believe in it and i say to you,"nature is red in tooth and claw".

survive or die.

the universe does not care.it is cold ,indifferent to a man's existence.

that is why we must be masters of it.

otherwise it will destroy us in an a random accident.

Every single day i get up from bed look out the window ,and shake my fist, and shout at the sky in defiance.Every single day.

Bullshit. On page 4 of this very thread you said:
I am very scared of nature which is extremley dangerous and can kill you easily.
Are you saying that you're scared of something that doesn't even exist? How deluded.
I never said I was afraid of storms per se...
No, just nature in general, as per above, and that whole "red in tooth and nail" fearfest.

What an idiotic point of view, and what a sad, fearful state of existence.

And the call comes back, "Keep it down, you! There's people over here tryin' to sleep!"

I'm guessing that should read: "Keep it down, you! There's sane people over here tryin' to sleep!"

BTW noknowes... you've become a hot topic in TNZ. Please come and join us.

Naah. I don't take noknowes seriously enough to make that kind of assessment. :p

I just thought of this...

we don't need these other animals.survival of the fittest determines if they stay or go.

So, we must destroy our environment before it gets a chance to destroy us? Okayyy....

Actually, that would explain some things over the last few decades. ;)

Are we still fucking talking about using speakers to destroy tornadoes or have we moved on to a more generalized insanity? There's a reason this is the Science and Technology forum and why it's more controlled than Miscellaneous. It's because we don't throw out batshit ideas and not back them up with verifiable data. You can do that in Miscellaneous and TNZ all day. Here in Sci & Tech, I figured we had a higher standard.

Are we still fucking talking about using speakers to destroy tornadoes...

J.

No.We are talking about using interference wave patterns produced by acoustic/non-acoustic transducers which will interfere with the delicate flow processes that operate in tornado creation and existence to allow their dissipation.I hope this clarifies it for you.

Your posted theory is full of erroneous shit. Post verifiable data to back it up or knock it off. This is Science and Technology, not fucking Fan Fiction.

Not afraid of storms? But you said:
we are not slaves to nature...cowering ...cowering in terror at lightening and thunder.
Your wording implies you've cowered at some point.

I approach storms with awe and caution, but I'm not cowering in terror. Not even that time lightning struck a power pole about 20-30 yards from where I was watching.

Dude, come down to TNZ, your theories are worthy of discussion down there. We... await.

I agree. You should try the TNZ forum noknowes. If you don't know how to access the forum, click here, enable the option, and press the join button.

There you will meet plenty of intelligent open minded people who will be happy to hear your ideas. :)

I dunno, J., he used a lot of ten letter words in his sentence... maybe there is something to it!

Weather is a complex process, which can diverge dramatically from expectations given the smallest change in initial conditions. It is absolutely possible to affect it using concert speakers, or butterfly wings for that matter.

However, we cannot come close to controlling that effect. You can never know what the weather would have been without that butterfly. And even to the degree the butterfly effect exists, it becomes far more prominent the further ahead in time you look----so trying to affect the immediate weather is fairly hopeless, I'd think.

You're right. Surely relatively large words must mean it has scientific merit! :D
