So I'm driving down the road and I see this guy tooling around in this blue Smart Car. Good that he is saving $ on gas. Not so good to look at. I mean I almost felt embarrassed for him! Almost as bad as that Element/ice cream truck! Just hideous...

I see quite a few of 'em around Ottawa. Saw one just this morning, actually.

Personally, though, I feel that they kind of missed the mark with the Smart Car. A base model costs about as much as a base Honda Fit, but the Fit is the superior vehicle across the board, and may even beat the Fourtwo when it comes to mileage (I may be wrong, but I'm too lazy to look it up ). I think if the Smart can be made sub-$10K, then it will be a much more logical purchase.

Yes, I would, if I ever buy a car (unlikely), it will be one like the Smart. Anything else would be unreasonable in the city I live in.

I would. As I said, I think the Fit is a better car for the money, but the Smart makes a lot of sense for city living. If it were cheaper, or if some other company were to come out with a similar vehicle that's less expensive, I can see it taking off more in North America, especially places like Toronto, New York, Vancouver, Portland, etc.

Nothing wrong with the Smart car at all. Not sure what your problem is. No one is forcing you to buy one.

I've enjoyed seeing them for, shoot, probably a decade or so during our travels in Europe. Liked them back then and still do.

Here's whats sad. Fact is they are not really all the good on gas. At least not here in the US.. Everyone seems to think these things get like 50+ MPG and thats just wrong. Hell my xB can do just as good in the city at the smart.

It's big thing is thats it's so small. It just fits places other cars won't.

Not only that, but since I have to drive on the interstate to get to work every day, I'd be scared to get in it! As others have said, there are much better vehicles for the money available.

The US and Canadian gas versions only get about 36 mpg combined cycle. Better than something like a Civic or Fit, but not by much. The diesel that we can get in Canada (or could up until last year) gets about 70 mpg. Much more attractive with that engine, IMO.

Having said that, they've been selling them for years here now, 90% of them are to commercial fleets. They're common enough I don't really notice them anymore. And apparently there is still a waiting list to get them so.... The sad thing is I know two people (one indirectly) who've bought them and they had nothing but problems. One of them is a total green freak and he said the hassle of owning it wasn't worth the fuel savings. He bought an Echo last fall to replace it.

They go like shit with 200 horsepower motorcycle engines in them though.

Well, it's a car for a specific market: Those who live in cities, want to drive a car in a city and want to have more options when it comes to parking spots. It's also really much more of a "second car" car in that respect.

I mean look at those ugly things. You can clearly see that one most important goal the designers had in mind: Make it short.

It's simply a niche car.

Although, if people are overcompensating for their small penis size when they drive a Hummer, do people with large dicks drive smart cars because they have nothing to prove? See, I'm more inclined to think they have even smaller dicks than the Hummer people.

They don't make a lot of sense for the price they are asking for them.

For example you can buy a Toyota Yaris for less and it has five seats and a trunk. However, getting five normal sized people in a Yaris would be a stretch it still offers more space for less money and also gets pretty darn good mileage.

Really? I'd like to see how you get a 5m vehicle into a 4m parking place.
There's someone in my neighbourhood who owns a Suburban - that stupid car can't even get into diagonal parking places around here without standing half a metre into the sidewalk because it's just too long, and good luck finding a parallel parking spot that's big enough...
