Weekend Numbers - Trek #7 - $5.6 million - $232 million

There is no need to crunch the numbers. This movie is going to make shitloads of money for Paramount. It's going to be huge on home video.
In a way that, say, Angels & Demons is not? Will world audiences buy Trek DVD's where they wouldn't A&D?

Say yes; we need an advantage over them. ;)

Exactly. The only reason the profit would be interesting to know is if we knew the profit for every other movie. Since that is unknown statistic, its pointless beyond saying this will make a large profit, especially factoring in the likely $100+ million in DVD/BD sales.

Yes, it will crush Angels & Demons in DVD sales. ;)

Actually I don't know how well it will do relative to A&D in home video sales worldwide (it will definitely do better in US). But I think it has better word of mouth so mainstream viewers who missed it in theaters would rent the DVDs to check it out, and many trekkies tend to be DVD/Blu-ray collectors so I wouldn't be surprised if it does better than A&D.

Saw it again today. The theatre was about 50% full (~100 people or so). Pretty good for weekend #6.

I'm really glad that STXI has turned out to have these long legs. I honestly thought it would do much worse, considering all of the movies it had to contend with following its release date.

I would expect $100 mil+ in DVD sales, at least.

I know DVDs are a big source of revenue, but DVD revenues are harder to account for. We often hear about box office revenue in the press, but DVD revenue? Not so much. How much have Trek movies (or others) made in DVD sales?

Very good answer; thanks.

I was going to try to go and see the movie again today in IMAX, but I'm not going to get to. Thursday the 18th is the last day our IMAX is showing Star Trek playing.

It's hard to compare older movies that came out before the advent and huge popularity of DVDs. Only Nemesis came out once DVDs became really popular, and that's not a good one to compare to anything.

Iron Man sold 8 million (500K of that BD) in its first week...which would easily translate to $125-$150 million. Dark Knight sold 13.5 million copies (1.7 of that BD) in its first week, which was probably $200-$250 million.

I have a feeling Star Trek will sell more than Iron Man, with BD accounting for a larger percentage since Blu-Ray has become more widely used.

Most movies these days make as much, if not more, money from home video sales as they do from the theatrical release--although for whatever reason studios tend to keep DVD/BD sales a lot quieter than boxoffice numbers.

Plus it's Trek, so Paramount will be selling it forever.

Some recent films, although performing poorly at the box office, were able to turn a profit thanks to DVD sales.

Plus, as said before, Paramount will be selling this for ages, and we'll see like 10 different editions with maybe one new interview on each one... :guffaw:

I can see Paramount releasing a normal edition, and then a special edition somewhere along the line. It's Trek, I bet even Nemesis has made its money back in the long term.

You're right. Even the bashers have to buy the DVDs so they can scrutinize every minor thing they despise in the movies they hate. How else could they eloquently state their distaste and disgust at any particular incarnation of Trek if they couldn't analyze it in great detail with the help of the pause button?

Tom Hanks was almost in First Contract.

Eddie Murphy was almost in Voyage Home.

Does Sean Connery have a film coming out?

;)

I have my reservations about the movie but it is a fantastic reinvigoration for the franchise. I hope the next movies manage to be substantive as well as exciting,

I kind of feel the same way. I liked the movie but don't feel it was the grand slam home run that many here think it was. But it feels great to see the big resurgence in popularity of Star Trek (and just a few years after it was considered dead and buried).

I think the next movie has a good chance to be better. It will have a high budget thank to the great box office success of this movie. And the writers don't have to deal with introduction of characters or the expository writing that was needed to connect this movie to previous movies.

I saw it again* very late last night in the mall IMAX theater. Over 100 people there, and based on the reaction when Kirk hit his head in the shuttle, some people were seeing it for the first time.

*3rd IMAX, 8th total

I'm always surprised to hear that this was the consensus. It makes me glad I didn't spend any time on Trek sites prior to the buzz leading up to XI.

As for the film, I have to say I find it gets better with repeat viewings, which is a great sign. Beyond the glaring weaknesses in the plot, I wasn't convinced upon my initial viewing that all of the major character moments worked (for example the big confrontation between Kirk and Spock). Third viewing was Friday evening. I found a lot of those moments had progressively gelled for me, and so the character arcs had become a lot more satisfying.

Also the plot flaws are bothering me less and less, helped I think by the fact that they are so glaring. It is almost as if there were a gigantic disclaimer attached to the movie: This is a complicated reboot and so will have gigantic plot holes, please excuse us for this inconvience and enjoy the rest of the feature. The sheer blatancy of it all somehow makes it easier to accept and eventually ignore.

Well, I did manage to get to the IMAX tonight after all. I think there were about 50 people there.

Vicki, meet Jeri:

What's that, like 15 times now?

Nice to hear 50-100 people showing up at IMAX viewings... that's a good chunk of money for the theater at this point in Trek's run.

Hope it continues another week at this pace, until Transformers blows everything out of the water.

Although I've heard rumblings the movie is too long.
