What medium alerted you on 9/11/2001?

9th November 2001? Don't remember much happening that day

You some kind of smart ass?:wtf:

No, I don't think he is.

Most of the rest of the world use the more logical dating system of progressives.

dd/mm/yy

Thus 9/11/01 for most of the world is 9th of November, 2001. The US dating system is something we all have to put up with and have to make adjustments for when we hear a date. The first time I heard something like 3/26, I wondered what the 26th month was.

I was on my way to work, turned on my car radio driving to work and heard radio announcers talking about some catastrophe...for the longest time they DIDN'T SAY WHAT IT WAS! I couldn't just pull over and find another radio or TV set. I thought it was a fucking nuclear attack or something.

Oh good. Because this thread is All About You(TM). :rommie:

I was on a an early moring conference call. When I joined in folks were talking about it so I turned on the TV to see what was going on. Had to drive to the Bay Area from Sacramento later that day. Can't remember ever seeing Highway 80 so empty.

I heard about it on the BBC News website. At first, it sounded like a plane had accidentally crashed in to one of the towers.

I was at work and a woman I worked with at the time came out of her office and told us. We have a consulate in New York and one of her colleagues called her from New York to give her the news.

I was actually in a chemistry lab that lasted from 8:30 to 11:20. A girl who came in late said a plane had hit one of the towers but most of us assumed it was just a small plane. When I finished my experiment and went on my way to lunch I saw that a few tv's have been set up outside the technology buildings where I saw replay of the towers going down. That was probably one of the most surreal and confusing days of my life. I was just 18 years old.

I was working at the Baltimore Sun. One of the editors came in and told us about the first plane, at which point we went down to the newsroom. Found out about the Pentagon from a friend who worked nearby and was on AIM.

I was getting ready to go to my Evidence class and happened to turn on the television; it was Brian Gumble on CBS running on about how a commuter plane or something had hit one of the world trade center towers. I watched for awhile just to see what was being said, and then I saw the second plane hit live.

I had to go on to class due to a test, and I quickly discovered I was the only person present in class who even knew about the second plane. On my way home, I called my Mom to see if she knew...and she informed me both towers had just collapsed. I didn't believe her; she certainly must not have understood what was being said on tv. Arriving home, I saw the tragedy for myself.

I was woken up by a phone call from a friend of mine who works for the CBS affiliate in L.A. who was watching all of the raw footage as it came in. At first I thought he was BS-ing me, but when I turned on the T.V. the reality hit home. I didn't actually see either tower fall live, for which I am grateful.

I was in world history when it happened and you could hear the sirens of the police cars and fire trucks from all over the city heading over there. You could also see the smoke from the classroom ( I was on the 8th or 9th floor). No one really knew what was going on though and the only clue we had was when they asked for any students who had family in the world trade center to head to the auditorium. I didn't know for sure what had happened though until my dad took me out of school and mentioned to me that one of the towers collapsed. I didn't find out about the second tower until much later in the day.

That being said, the chinese use a year, month, day system so clearly more than one sixth of the world does not use dd/mm/yy ;) :p

I actually found out about it on this very web site.

I had my conference period at school and another teacher was using my room. I was in the cramped teacher's lounge and was goofing off on the board.

A thread title in TNZ caught my eye...WTC GOES BOOM. I wasn't sure what WTC was so I opened the tread.

Once I understood what had happened I went to the principal's office, but they had it on. On the way back to the lounge I saw the Library had there set on so I watched there. Saw the second plane,I think...may have just been the continued replaying.

When Third period rolled around, my class watched the TV as did 4th (we are on Block Scheduling.) We watched for a couple of days.

Since I couldn't get on any news site...too crowded, I kept up on it from here. Many eyes, many countries, truly universal coverage.

We had a couple of people who could see it from their places, one retired Navy who was near/helped at the Pentagon...unique coverage. A shame those threads are not available as an eye witness/archive for history.

Its interesting how many people's schools actually let the students watch the events on tv. In NYC it was a complete no-go and they did everything to keep us in the dark

I was slIeeping when my mom called from her work to tell me what was going on.

I remember turning on the tv and seeing the second plane hit.

It was highschool, I was in my sophormore year. Class started at 7:40 am central time. I was in my math class taking a test.

We heard on the PA that planes had hit the twin towers.

10:30 I took the bus to go Central Campus for my Chinese class. I passed by students who were watching some tv's

My hippie Chinese teacher brought up the subject then went on with class

3:30- Drivers ED back at school. My teacher brought it up saying that he had relatives in New York, then went on with class.

5:00 Parents picked me up and handed me the paper. Saw lots of lines with people at the gas pumps.

I walked down from my dorm room and saw what looked like a high rise rise on the big screen in the lounge. I thought nothing of it and proceeded to class. Our professor then told us what had happened and dismissed class. I spent the next couple days in survival mode hatching the news coverage and finally broke down a week later.

So not the thread for "we do it this way, so its inherently superior" crap.

It is a shame-what an amazing record of events that would be!

I was in the file room at work and heard my boss and one of the accountants talking about something. I only caught bits and snatches such as "It was going to happen someday" or "It's all over the TV"-still not knowing what they were talking about i went to the third floor where there was a tv in a conference room figuring whatever they were talking about I could see if I turned it on.

It was already on with a bunch of people. I didn't know what was happening and they told me I was stunned and ridicuously suggested "Maybe there was nobody inside when the planes hit" but of course that was not possible.

When the Pentagon attack occured it came across a radio someone was listening at their desk to and I raced back to the TV. And still later someone said one of the towers collapsed but Ididn't believe it because when I got back to the TV there wa so much smoke you couldn't see anything.

Later that day I saw a clip I have never seen since...it appeared to be a handful of people that leaped in a group...part of me wonders if I actually saw people or debris falling because I don't remember stories about a group of jumpers just individuals.

Without exception the darkest day in American history.
