Letterman beating Conan

It didn't even take two full weeks for him to take back the lead.

story

I also heard that Fallon is now losing to Ferguson's Late Late Show (that's no surprise. Fallon is painful to watch and needs to go)

I'm more surprised it took this long to happen. It's going to take Conan a while to find his groove and build an audience in the earlier time slot. And there's no doubt he's up against an incredibly tough competitor with Letterman.

The real surprise here is Julia Roberts is a total biatch. Or maybe not.

I'll still watch Conan over Letterman. Letterman is just too much of an old curmudgeon for me.

And as for Ferguson vs. Fallon, it doesn't surprise me Fallon is losing. He didn't even deserve to be on SNL either. At least I get more sleep with Conan being earlier.

I'm not too surprised. I like Conan way more than Letterman, but I thought it strange they would bump Jay to shove Conan an hour earlier when he just doesn't seem to have as broad of an appeal (read: he's not completely bland like Leno).

I'm afraid Conan's focus group bit from the other night was probably just the tip of the demographic iceberg for him.

12:35 to 1:35 gave Conan an audience just sufficiently sleep deprived to simulate mild drunkenness or light marijuana use, and just enough leeway that he could get a masturbating bear past the censors. The two together with his personality were just awesome. The earlier timeslot unfortunately means less masturbation and more alertness, a combination that is sure to injure his demographics.

One thing I like about Letterman is that he's honest. If he doesn't like someone, he'll let you know it. He won't pussy foot around it. He couldn't hide his contempt of Madonna, Richard Simmons, or Bill O'Reilly even if he tried.

I will always watch Conan over Dave, even though I do like Letterman. As for Jimmy Fallon, I grew tired of him quickly. Craig Ferguson is far superior to Jimmy Fallon, and I'm surprised Fallon's still on the air.

I don't watch any of the late night shows anymore, and haven't done so in quite some time, but it's going to be interesting to see how NBC's gambit plays out over the next year or so from a business/ratings point of view.

You know I recently rewatched "The Late Shift" which was a HBO movie about the Letterman and Leno late night wars and how NBC drove Dave to CBS. (BTW, the entire thing is on youtube so check it out. Search "Late Shift p1") I also have the book.

Anyway point being, I don't think NBC learned their lesson. The whole Leno leaving and Conan taking over was a little clunky. From what I have seen and heard Conan's contract said that if he wasn't given the Tonight Show by by 2010 NBC would have to pay him something like 50 million. So NBC forced Leno out of the Tonight Show by not renewing his contract. However, Leno didn't want to retire so then NBC got scared he would go to another network like Letterman did and gave him his own show that will now air before Conan.

It's just all weird and I don't feel very well run or thought out.

Compare that to CBS's late night situation which I think is very well organized. Probably due in large part to Letterman's production company (and thus Letterman) having basically complete control over both shows and hosts.

I figure Letterman will retire in 3 years or so. I wonder who will take his place? I'm sure whoever it is has already been told they are the successor and the transition will be pretty clean. Top contenders are Craig Ferguson or John Stewart if you ask me). There's always the outside chance that Craig Kilborn is just sitting pretty waiting in the wings to come back. He and Dave got along pretty well.

^ Oh, man. Jon Stewart as late night talk show host? I don't know if I would be able to decide between him and Conan!

I believe I read somewhere where Ferguson said that when Letterman leaves, he leaves.

"I just don't know if I like being that visible," he said. "I don't know if I would want to ramp that up any more, you know. And people here find that, I think, quite difficult to (understand)."
Fallon's just ugh. From lame SNL skits and "beef solvers" to this

I hate how he can't keep a serious face

I wonder how long until Fallon runs out of SNL alums to guest on his show.

His monologue(if you call it that) sucks. Like ten "jokes" and that's it

Nooooooooooo.

I got to think that Dave could sit down with him and get him to stay. After all Dave doesn't really like being a celebrity either. He keeps his private life very private.

This is neat because maybe Craig wouldn't want the Late Show and might be content just keeping his show. I think that makes sense because I don't know if Craig's format would translate well to the Letterman timeslot. Ferguson's show is low key and much more personal with a small audience and no band. He also pulls in good ratings (even before Fallon viewers jumped ship).

This means that they could bring in Stewart without stepping on anyone's toes. It would be win-win. Colbert would just slide over to the Daily Show seat.
