Most fun you've ever had playing a video game?

When I was like 10 or 11, I got my first PC. So one of the games I got for it was Commander Keen 4. My dad, my bro, and me would play that game so much it's crazy and we had a ton of fun. That was actually the only (video) gaming the three of us ever did together.

Hmm...

Playing Wind Waker with my girlfriend.
Playing Mario 64 (to 120-star completion!) with my cousin.
Designing ludicrous siege scenarios in Age of Empires II and observing the carnage.
Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and Mario Kart 64 4-player fun with family and friends.
Playing Super Monkey Ball with my brother.
Playing co-op Serious Sam with my brother.

I think there's a general theme here.

I would have to say playing Super Smash Brothers Brawl at a LAN party last year with 3 of my friends. We started playing at around 3 AM and I figured I would play for an hour or so and then go to sleep for awhile, the next thing I knew it was sometime between 6 and 7 AM and the sun was rising.

Frontier: Elite II on my trusty Amiga 1200, which I played constantly between the ages of 10 and 14 (seriously).

No other game at the time made me *feel* like I was inhabiting the gameworld. I lived it, breathed it. I loved traversing the massive galaxy, trading, earning credits from odd missions, fighting my way into pirate infested star ships, and generally just absorbing the futuristic atmosphere of the year 3200.

Not only did I play it by myself, but my father and uncle also played it quite a bit and we'd often talk about it, dare I say bond over it. There are so many good memories I have that relate to that wonderful game.

No game even came close to giving me that same sense of immersion until Morrowind came along so many years later.

When someone asks me what my favourite game of all time is, I find it an impossible question to answer but Frontier is always the first that comes to mind.

I know, that probably all sounds a bit pathetic...

^ Great game. I had it for my Amiga, but never really played it enough to become truly immersed. A friend of mine played it all the time, though. It's because of him that I bought it in the first place!

I'd have to say Left 4 Dead ranks pretty hight on my list of most fun. Been playing for the past two weeks. Its my first experience with online gaming and I've been having a blast. And now that I have a mic, it opens up even more fun.

Playing as a medic (on offence) or soldier (on defence) in Q3F Aussie league & pugs Beta1c to Beta1h. 16 player organised chaos, game engine based on QWTF (not TFC which was 'teh ghey'). Shame Beta2 killed that party.

Some vidz that illustrate some of the lightning fast dynamicism of this once great game -

Soldier vid
Chapter 3 The Clip 2 examples of what used to be a whole series of vids that everyone in the community had. Sound removed :(
Q3F demo fragments
Q3F movement Shows some typical recon antics.

noip blind rocket shot across map Short clip of noip from my clan scoring a spectacular rocket hit in a ladder match.
This last vid features many prominent players of the Aussie league, members of my clan ( Connection Interrupted ) and I also participated in its creation. How Sweet it is

Morrowind, I suppose. It's far from perfect, but I found the world highly immersive and the lore quite gripping. Spent many, many hours playing it. Only wish I could forget playing the game so I could experience it anew. heh The generic quality of Oblivion was quite a disappointment.

Left 4 Dead is fun to play with friends, but I have encountered more than the usual number of assholes in the L4D "community".

Just last night, I was playing the No Mercy campaign in Versus mode. We had to kick one player for music-spamming. Then, my team kicked me just because I wasn't playing well enough to suit them.

Never mind that I had been playing the campaign from the beginning; that both of them had joined the game fairly late and I had earned more points for our team than either of them; and we were on the very last level. Those motherfuckers.

That's the last time I play L4D with people I don't know. Friends-only games for me, from now on.

I hear ya there. I've tried Versus twice and been treated like crap both times because I can't seem get the hang of playing an Infected. So I've been sticking to just the Campaign mode. Thats been a lot of fun, and I've played with a lot of good people. And fortunately very few griefers.

I'm just gonna hold off on Versus til I get a lot better, or manage to find a training group of some kind.

Hey, assuming you're on the PC version, keep an eye out for Tank bait. Maybe we could play together sometime.

Wife and I on 360-you got? Ask Cable 99 or Vandat if you can join-we'll teach you Vs. Around 9-9:15 PST. Just send TrekBBS as msg-I'll understand.

Playing a Fifa drinking game I and my uni housemates invented.
Playing Football Manager til the earily hours of the morning sat in a friend's bedroom.
Playing Perfect Dark with friends.

Mostly playing with people I guess.

The first time I beat Civ IV on noble difficulty, desperately trying to hold onto my capital after my spaceship launched because the global superpower made a mad dash to destroy me. It was fun and stressful at the same time.

I played a great LAN game of Age of Empires where on three occasions I was reduced to only a small group of citizens and written off by the other players, but each time I rebuilt my empire. I refused to give up in the face of repeated failures and I eventually managed to win the game to everyone's astonishment.

But the best has to be the time in GTA IV free mode when some random guy decided to chase down and kill me. After 20 minutes of him chasing me around Liberty City, through alleyways, highways and even the subway, he finally managed to kill me. It was an incredible heart-pounding chase.

Third this, I love Left 4 Dead but the online community seems to be filled with assholes.

Not at all. I loved Frontier: Elite II, and would fully immerse myself into it too.

The Newtonian physics model took some time getting used to, but hopping around planets and fighting off Imperial scum during some of the higher level missions (or Federal scum if playing an Imperial Navy mission) and taking photos of the secret installations you should be bombing instead, before making a run for it and lobbing your nuke groundward was fun indeed. :D

Just as fun was attempting my first slingshot manoeuvre around a gas giant, and attempting to break every single law in all three governments and getting away with it with a paltry fine ("Piracy and murder"? Here you go... oh, and get something for yourself while you're at it....).

All that on a single 1.44MB floppy disk too. Bugs aside, it was incredible. It captured my imagination in a way that the X-Wing games somehow didn't quite manage (although X-Wing Alliance did come close). Even its nearest modern equivalent, the X Universe games by Egosoft, while visually and audibly stunning, and still addictive as hell, didn't really recapture that initial immersiveness of Frontier. (Plus you can't land on planets. Boo.)

For me, my most revelatory and fun moment I remember was the very first time I played Unreal Tournament. Having previously played the original Quake and Doom games, I had no idea that deathmatch gaming could be so damned fun and incredibly camp. "KILLING SPREE!" :guffaw:

Absolutely agreed. Quite a feat of programming, and imagination. I really hope someone comes along (if not David Braben) and does a worthy spiritual successor. It's not like we don't have the hardware to do something mindblowing these days.
