Taking part in a medical study

Yesterday I went into the Royal Hobart Hospital to be tested as part of a long-term medical study. I had a lung function test, a skin allergy test and blood taken so that my DNA can be used in genetic research.

This study started in 1968 woth a group of 7 years old being tested including my brother. Then they extended the study to include siblings of the original children tested. I was informed that they hope to do a followup in about 15 years time and they will be sending us newsletter periodically to let us know how the study is progressing. The hospital have already tested about 800 people and are hoping that they will end up testing over 1000. This doesn't include all the people being tested elsewhere in Tasmania and in other parts of Australia.

So I am asking everyone the following

1) Have you ever taken part in a medical study
2) If you haven't, would you if you were asked to?

I intended to take part in a study that would've had me stuck in the hospital for a week, but my asthma ruled me out. Fascists!

1. No
2. Probably not (especially if it involved testing meds...I don't want to be a living fountain of side effects  )

1. No
2. Yes

Sounds very interesting!

The Tasmanian Longitudinal Health Study (which is the one I am taking part in) is the world's largest and longest running respiratory health research study.

Tasmania is considered one of the best three places in the world to undertake such genetic studies in (the other two are Iceland and Sardinia).

I've never taken part in any medical study (that I know of

), but I wouldn't mind. It sounds interesting and, of course, it has the potential to help people.
