Sigourney Weaver's Ripley No 1 Sci-Fi Woman Of All Time!

Ellen Ripley, Sigourney Weaver’s iconic character from the Alien film
series, has been named the No 1 Sci-Fi Woman Of All Time by leading genre
website Totalscifionline.com

Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Buffy Summers, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar,
came in second place, while Battlestar Galactica's Starbuck played by Katee
Sackhoff, completed the top three.

Well it's good that Ripley got ahead of Buffy Summers. Not sure if she's my all-time favourite "Sci-Fi Woman" but at least the franchise she come from is actually sci-fi.....

In terms of genre impact and general iconography, though, Ellen Ripley definitely takes the cake. Alien was a watershed moment, not just in Science Fiction, but the history of women/gender in cinema. it's influence in that regard is difficult to overstate. Thus, I'm glad to see this... no problems at all with this list.

Yeah, like, duuuh. There wouldn't even be a Kara Thrace without Sarah Connor.

Good point, how'd I even forget about that... duh.

Though I guess it could be argued that Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley are nearly interchangeable copies of one another, psychologically. To list them both would be a bit redundant, as, other than setting and circumstances, they're way too alike. And Ripley was first.

No Aeryn Sun? OK, I guess I can see how they made the list, at least in part. Starbuck shouldn't be anywhere near the top though, and there are plenty of 'WTF' entries...

I like Priss being on there.

But yeah, I'll buy Ripley as the number one pick. I'm kind of surprised Leila didn't score higher.

In defence of Buffy, I think it's only fair to point out she has fought robots, demon robots, had a robot copy of her made, fought a brain sucking extra-dimensional creature that fell from the sky, got stuck in a time loop, hit by an invisibility ray and had an annoying young side kick appear out of nowhere. But yeah, Ripley easily deserves the top spot.

Yay. I love Ripley. And I'm glad they included my beloved Janeway. But I simply cant believe that Jaime Sommers isnt on this list! Lindsay Wagner's indelible heroine is the greatest of all sci-fi women!

Amen! How is Buffy on the line but not the Bionic Woman?

Where is Erin Grey?
How could Leeloo make the list and not Wilma Dearing?

Where's Emma Peel?

No complaints about Ripley making number one. But the absence of Aeryn Sun is unforgiveable.

(The TRANSFORMERS chick makes the list, but not our favorite renegade Peacekeeper?)

And I'll give the Buffy thing a pass just because the line between sf,fantasy, and horror can be pretty blurry sometimes.

(And speaking of which, where is Selene of UNDERWORLD fame?)

The chick from Transformers made the list!?!

Is the list that stupid, or is there really that few decent female role models in science fiction?

I think they just had very short memories.

I mean, how can you include Sydney Bristow, but forget about Diana Rigg or Modesty Blaise?

There are a lot of stronger characters they could have opted for instead of Megan Fox's Transformers gal (and I don't think Halle Berry's Storm or the puppet character from Stingray should be on the list either; I'd also boot Sarah Jane, but Doctor Who fans may disagree).

Anyway, Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane, Nana Visitor as Kira Nerys, Mary McDonnell as Laura Roslin, Lindsay Wagner as Jaime Sommers, and Claudia Black as Aeryn Sun are just some of the characters they left off the list.

By the way, for those who raised the point earlier, although the article's heading just says "sci-fi" the introduction says "heroines of sci-fi and fantasy", so they're casting the net wider than just science fiction.

Agreed that it makes perfect sense to make Ripley & Buffy the top 2.

If they were going to include someone from X-Men, I would have gone with Jean Grey instead of Storm.

I think Starbuck is WAY too high on this list. I've despised that character for a long time now.

I also cannot believe that they put the chick from Transformers on here. There are so many much more deserving candidates out there:
Laura Roslin from Battlestar Galactica
Cordelia Chase & Winifred Burkle from Angel
Faith from Buffy/Angel
Seven of Nine from Star Trek: Voyager. (Her wardrobe may have been a shameless ratings stunt but the character had a lot of depth and certainly became one of the most prominent women in the genre in the 1990s.)
The Borg Queen from Star Trek: First Contact
Elektra Natchios
