Hi Welcome! I just got here a few weeks ago myself, but have been watching TOS since the 70s.

I like Star Wars and Farscape too by the way

Give TOS a try, you might really like it.

I agree with you on the casting choices. I like them too they did an amazing job.

I was so shell shocked leaving the theater the first time around, that aside from McCoy and Kirk, I had to let it all sink in. Spock grew on me and over time so has Scotty. They were good, and they were the same as TOS characters... but somehow different.

I like what you said about Spock having a need for vengeance and Kirk's jettisoning, I never thought of it that way. As you said, it was so out of character for him, I just chalked it up to a plot point. But that's an interesting thought.

I thought it was the logical thing to do; Spock was learning the undefatigable dynamism of J.T. Kirk. Spock didn't look one bit surprised to see Jim show up on the monitor down in hydraulics.

Im gonna give you a fair warning. Stay away from The Neutral Zone. To steal from bones TNZ is a disease and danger wrapped in darkness and posters who wont shut the hell up

Speaking of which.....I've seen this TNZ mentioned, but it doesn't show up in my forum list. How do I find it? Maybe I haven't made enough posts to access it? Not that I personally want to start anything, mind you. But you do want to see true colors.

He really didn't. It was like, "hm, oh him again." I think Spock eventually just gave up because Kirk kept coming back.

I also enjoyed what's left undiscussed, like Spock's out-of-character jettisoning of Kirk. In that instance, as we find out later in Spock's discussion with his father, we find that Spock was finding himself consumed with the uncomfortable emotional need for vengeance, and yet here he doesn't show it, and instead takes a fairly unreasonable stance against the man proposing the course of action Spock himself must have been tempted to take.

It took me 3 viewings to understand the meaning of Spock's actions, which I thought were out of character, and like you, it happened during Spock's conversation with his father in the transporter room, when he says he's afraid of the anger and the desire for vengeance he's feeling.
He's so blinded by not wanting to give in that he can't see that the logical solution is to go after Nero before he destroys Earth, and ASAP.
Kirk echoes his illogical desire to give in his feelings and to pursue Nero instead of joinging with the reminder of the fleet and, by jettisoning Kirk, it's like nuSpock is jettisoning his own anger out of the Enterprise, as well as the temptation to give into that anger.

I noticed that too and his look reminded me of the look Spock Prime would have sometimes in TOS, something like "Figures..."

"Out of the chair..." seems to be the early favorite for best line of the movie!

Welcome, NuFan. I'm a old Groknard who enjoyed the hell out of the new film and hope that the new film series will give some life back to the Franchise. Which it has done. I like the new spin. Granted thier werea few plot holes, but they rolled with it and had fun doing the movie.

Thanks for replying. Sounds like a super secret dungen/leper's colony for Morlocks, criminally insane Ferengi and Borg assimilations gone terribly wrong.

Another welcome, Nufan OP. I think you've identified exactly why I'm a star trek fan and why I loved this movie. It's the characters, the friendship, the trust, the love, the depth of their pain, their triumph over pain, their values, and their mission -- not just the visionary mission of Starfleet but their personal missions to become better people and make the universe a better place. In no other place can I find these things than in Star Trek.

Yep, that essentially sums the place up lol. its pretty much a free for all in there with few to no rules. Its a dangerous place to be, but out of all the forums here it is the most colorful and has the most history behind it

But you should definitely get switched on to TNZ by the administrator as soon as you're able. It makes good reading -- and timely. You can count on them to have opinions on breaking news.

If you look under the main menu, you can see an administrative forum, wherein there should be a sticky post, explaining when and how to get switched on.

ShimmeringFacet, I think you need to go to User CP and give yourself permission to see TNZ and post in it. contact one of the mods (do you have PM ability?) and they'll walk you through it.

I had to laugh; in addition to "this episode was badly written" and "whoever wrote this episode should die," -- "There's this stupid spinning fan in every episode" passed between us. The only difference is that the blades were under water...

Thanks for your well written OP; I enjoyed it very much. And I enjoyed the movie, even though we are on opposite ends of the Trek scale. I started watching the show on NBC in 1966 when I was 13 -- and I've seen the new movie 11 times so far.

Among the TOS episodes that ladies often like are "Journey to Babel" and "Amok Time," because they are Spock episodes. But I honestly couldn't recommend anything other than watching the series from the beginning. You get to learn along with Gene, the cast and writers. It's a growing experience, like a garden.

Not to make you feel old, but you're the same age as my mother. Which is odd to me because she never, ever liked scifi. (Dad, on the other hand, while not a Trekkie, was the one who introduced me to all my favorite older science fiction franchises. Incidently, he's the one who called me gushing about this movie and demanding I get my behind to a theater.)

Sadly, there is no Maths subforum. Though I have seen some serious maths discussed in realation to physics.

Aw. No math forum. It's okay, the math part of my brain has since rotted and abandoned me to thoughts like, "oooh, shiny!"

miniglik, sci-fi was huge in the 1950's. My dad wrote sci-fi for his college freshman English & Composition classes. He considered studying astronomy, but went into engineering. His favorite show was Twilight Zone. (Hogan's Heroes was a close second, I think.)
