Star Trek made more money under one month than...

StarTrek1701

Commodore
Commodore
..Superman Returns, Serenity and Twilight did in their entire runs. :techman:

That's a fact. Live long.. and prosper. :borg:

It is also the first film of 2009 to cross the "blockbuster" $200 million mark and is currently the highest grossing film of the year. Currently speaking, of course.

I'm in awe of its greatness! :D

Whether you love it or hare it, how much money a film makes doesn't equal its quality

Domestically you're right but worldwide both Twilight and Superman Returns made more (although that could very easily change). Still, I only really care in the sense that I want to see a sequel and the money guarantees that there will be one. Other than that it doesn't matter in the slightest.

Checking www.boxofficemojo.com, both those movies follow the "usual" pattern for blockbuster Hollwyood flicks - 50/50 domestic/foreign revenues. Star Trek is lagging because foreign revenues are "missing" - an ongoing mystery. Why don't foreigners like Star Trek?!? :( (Or maybe I should ask why they like dumb movies like Superman Returns and Twilight. :rommie:)

Serenity
is lopsided like Star Trek - more like 70/30 - so maybe foreigners just don't like spaceships? But the Star Wars prequels were 50/50 (more like 45/55 in fact) so even that theory doesn't hold up to scrutiny.

I used to take my folks to the movies. They don't speak English so I always chose the simple blockbusters with simple plot and cool effects or they would fall asleep. I miss those family movie nights even though the movies weren't that great.

Star Trek has this image of being boring where I come from. I think it used to get those Saturday afternoon slots with other "boring" shows like B5 and Stargate. Nobody watched those. I mean, those alien make-ups really don't do them any favors with general audience. I have no idea, since I'm too young, but I would imagine TNG and TOS had the same treatment. Doubly uncool if they were reruns playing to an audience from a different era.

I spoke to my sis and asked if she had taken my folks to see Star Trek yet. She weren't even interested in seeing it herself and couldn't be persuaded. I think they would love it. The last movie they liked was the Dark Knight though I haven't seen it myself.

But not as much as I Am Legend, Hancock, or Alvin and the Chipmunks.

I really hate this movie sometimes, not that it's so awful but it just didn't bowl me over like it did so many others, I'm jealous of all the insufferable fans that I don't feel the same way about it.

As successful as Star Trek has been as a fun movie, it it had a very dumb plot. It was borderline ridiculous at points in a very bad way.

Oh yes it does, at least in Star Trek's case as Temis pointed out. It was more fun than any of those movies combined.

Ohhhh. See, I couldn't really figure out why you posted a thread about Star Trek's success in a forum other than the Trek XI forum. And why making more money than those three particular films was any more significant than it making more money than, say, it making more money than Star Trek V, IX and X (for example, I have no idea if it has). Especially seeing as the first two of those three films have been hotly debated as to their quality before.

But now I get it.

Your teh cleverz

I haven't seen the other two, but I'd say Star Trek 09 was more fun than Serenity simply because it was more of a fun sort of movie. In terms of script and acting quality, not all that much difference.

I think in relation to Trek, monetary success matters because of the decline in past productions. Trek needed to be proven a viable entity again monetarily speaking and Star Trek accomplished that.
