The thing with Neelix leaving is that they basically addressed the fact (backhandedly) in "The Expanse" (or whichever episode it was where Neelix realized he'd become useless as a guide) that Neelix had chosen to go with them despite knowing that he'd never go home again. Indeed, his home was pretty bleak.
Then all of a sudden, here's a Talaxian colony! With kids! And Neelix has a Talaxian home! And this is more of a home and more of a family than
Voyager? The people who brought him back to life? Who spared him from a life of Tuvix?
That was ridiculously convenient.
Anything short of letting him go home with
Voyager was a cop-out. In fact, "Homestead" should have been more about the fact that
Voyager was his home now.
Man, you really are a Mustang guy too aren't ya, you pretty much wrote what I was thinking myself lol.
I'm not sure if I misinterpreted the whole point of the character in Voyager, but it seems to me that the whole point of Neelix was to give us a character that represented the "little guy" who's opressed by the evil strong entities, and then another set of big strong "good" guys come in and save his ass, and he ends up eternally grateful to them.
The idea works on a certain psychological level (our need to protect the little guy who is innocent). Now Voyager didn't exactly implement his character the way it should have been done:
- For one, they made the character way too cheery. When we have episodes about him, we see actually that he is putting a front and inside there is a lot of trauma he is trying to hide. This makes the whole cheery aspect of the character very annoying.
- Bringing in a GF who is like 100 years younger than you is just creepy. They didn't need to do that at all. If they wanted the character to have a GF, she should have been Talaxian as well.
Even with these missteps, I still somewhat liked the character. Remember that episode where they encounter the creature that "gives them what they want" in their minds so it could eat them?
Everyone thinks they found a wormhole and are back on Earth, and even Neelix was happy and was even shaking hands with the Starfleet Admirals. This was clearly a sign that Neelix felt accepted with his new human family. In turn his new human family liked and respected him, and went out of their way several times to defend them.
So when he left his new family to "be with the girl" I felt it was contrary to what they had been showing us on screen for the past few years. I was looking foward to seeing Neelix shake hands with Starfleet Admirals for real.
Like someone above said, the entire bunch of Talaxians should have gotten out of that damn rock and followed Voyager home with Janeway and Crew.
The Federation would have probably been ecxtatic to welcome them as new members and even found a suitable planet for them to live on.
