Pine Kirk, etc, on CNN.com front page Now

Kind of a depressing headline to go with it, but essentially true. We were promised Star Trek, and instead we got some second-rate cyberpunk.

I have Wilson's book, though, and it's actually pretty good reading.

When I was in High School, I was in this thing called Academic Decathlon (I'm not an uber-nerd though, I played Football and ran Track too), and part of it was writing and giving speeches.
My speech was over this exact topic, it was a humorous slant on the world my generation was promised. I mentioned the world's fairs in the 30s-60s and magazines etc of the day, and gave some reasons why it materialized.
It was fun, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks of the subject.

Here's the actual article:

Did everyone hear that story that Bruce Greenwood told? All the time they were preparing the Enterprise bridge set or between takes, there would be 50 or 100 people all milling around, lounging on things, everywhere.

All except one place: no one would sit in the captain's chair. By tacit agreement, apparently. That story was in the video referenced in the Trek News item in the side bar up there. (Trek news has been very handy; thanks very much.)

Articles like that are so wrong-headed, they're not taking into account "information age" advances that outpace anything they could dream of in the 30s. Perhaps less obvious than flying cars, but the knowledge of man has doubled just since WWII!
