Oh, they had sub-text, all right. In the episode of LotL with the Confederate soldier, Rick Marshall makes a direct reference to psychedelic mushrooms.

QFT. I've said it many times: When Star Trek came out, there was a thriving tradition of written science fiction and established science fiction writers to draw from.
I'm plodding through my collection of science fiction magazines one month at a time. I'm on 1954 right now and I'm seeing writers like Bloch and Bixby Sturgeon. Soon I'll be seeing Spinrad and Blish and Niven. Star Trek couldn't help being science fiction with writers like that around.
These days, the magazines are mostly dead and people are far more into fantasy than science fiction. So Trek is fantasy a la Star Wars.
There are people in this thread who have talked about how dopey TOS is and how it's not science fiction at all. I just marvel at all the science predictions they got *right*.

Stupid TNG *several times* had people doing manual database searches among data entries of thousands if not millions. Even when I was 14 I knew that was retarded. And Voyager is complete fantasy and not even consistent with its own universe.
So, I guess my point is, NuTrek can't help not being science fiction. There's no one around to write it except, who? David Brin?

I'm gonna post this in several spots because it bears repeating: I've been sorta kinda damning this movie w/ faint praise (or is it praising it with faint damnation?) for a while now but I have anecdotal proof that it is doing the one thing many of us--cheerleader, naysayer and reluctant admirer alike--hoped it would. A former student of mine, now a high school junior and a fan of Star Wars, is watching TOS for the first time and loving it, though she never expected she would. She's particularly fond of "The Menagerie."

It wasn't funny. It was rude and hateful and explicitly against the rules of this BBS. And, honestly, the fact that you guys are getting away with it when other establish members get banned for it both disgusts me and undermines any respect that I would otherwise have for the staff here.

Well I too think this merits posting in several places! I'm so pleased to hear that the teenager your aquainted with is enjoying Star Trek...does he have any complaints about it...or is it a full on love fest...as it was with us when we first viewed TOS....
She just said she's really enjoying it. What's funny is that, as a Star Wars fan, she's now coming to see all the stuff SW ripped off--er, borrowed--from ST.

I have taken a dislike to your posts. For whatever reason, you FAIL to accept the fact that there are people who dislike a movie YOU enjoy, and rather than discussing salient points in order to contribute to what should be a discussion, you attempt to tear others down.

As I have said, I have yet to see a cogent argument without a lot of sniggering and namecalling. If you can present an argument without calling the writers morons or the fans who like this film sheep, then I'll gladly listen. It's meaningless to me to simply say that ____ sucks or ____ lacks substance without explaining why or providing proof. Hence the argument is a complete failure and deserves to be dismissed as such.
As far as what you think of my posts, I am unconcerned.
