I know, it's just like the new Batman movies. They have nothing to do with the late 80s-90s Batman movies yet people aren't saying that one or the other didn't exist. No one complains about that. I see this as a comic book type thing even though I'm not a big fan of comics outside of Batman and Superman really. Every once in a while there's a new era in comics where everything basically gets rebooted. Doesn't say that that era didn't happen. It just basically says we can't keep the same story going forever because in reality people age and you can't keep the same continuity when Batman is 40 when he started or 30 and is 60 now and still fighting. Same thing with Trek. Everything had kinda been done and it got boring. Trek quit being exciting about the 6th season of DS9. After that point the writers all ran out of stuff to make it really interesting Voyager got worse and worse, DS9 did too. Both had decent moments after that point but not really a lot. Enterprise and Nemesis were utter failures. Trek needed a reboot. And because of time paradox's this was a perfect way to do it.I still don't understand why people think the Prime Universe has been erased, especially since TOS-Remastered is still running in syndication (with plans to replace it in the fall with reruns of TNG in many TV markets, IIRC).
As far as CBS is concerned, nothing has changed. It's just that with Star Trek XI, the movies are now branching away from the TV shows in their own separate universe.
I always thought this was a win-win situation for everyone involved...
The prime universe is gone. The only person that is/was aware of it was Spock and those that he told. Spock should of at the end of the movie instead of helping set up a new colony for surviving Vulcans but instead he should of been trying to devise a way to repair the time line. By not doing so he alters the future and allows the destruction of his home planet plus 6 billion Vulcans.
When Pike is questioned by Nero he says he "prevented genocide" by destroying Vulcan. Pike tells him that he is "blaming the Federation for something that hasn't happened". Nero later says "my purpose is not to avoid the destruction of the home I love but to make sure but to create a Romulus that is free to exist without the Federation". Only they are the ones worth saving.
Since the time line was not repaired, the prime universe is gone.
So Nero in is deluded way is affecting his future by destroying Vulcan and Earth. So why people say that this new movie is an alternate is incorrect. The villain is trying to alter "the future"....his future.
Prime Universe exists in parallel to the new one. It is that simple folks.
Well according to Paramount and Abrams it is all out the window. The phrase it is "not your fathers trek" helps solidify that point of view.
Really?... So this movie clearly wipes out TOS, TNG, DS9 and VOY. Only leaving ENT...
Well, just a quick check...
Obviously the wiping out wasn't done very well.
- My Trek DVD set is still in existence.
- My Trek video tapes are still in existence.
- My Trek books are still in existence.
- My Trek iTunes videos still exist on my computer.
- All three seasons of TOS are still available from the iTunes Music Store.
- All three seasons of TOS are still available on CBS's YouTube channel.
- And it seems that various Trek series are still being aired daily on TV.
Why do you need everything wiped out? Clearly this is something you not only feel passionately about, but also you seem to need others to agree with you to validate your feelings. Why should it matter to you what any of the rest of us think about this? Why would what fan sites say cause you any distress?
Just out of curiosity, would the movie be any better or worse if every fan shared your views on this? Does your Trek world view collapse if there exist people who don't see this the way you do?
And most importantly... are you going to organize old Trek book (and video, DVD, etc.) burning mobs to destroy what you see as heretic materials? Are you going to lobby for laws against the public viewing of old Trek?
Just how extreme is your point of view on this?![]()
Well according to Paramount and Abrams it is all out the window. The phrase it is "not your fathers trek" helps solidify that point of view.
How many times does it have to be said "Your DVDs are not going to turn into dust?" before it sinks in?
Why are you trying to tell me what I like or hate? Now stop letting others inflict themselves on you and stop inflicting yourselves on others...unless you get some sort of perverse pleasure out of it.

You clearly are among the few here that are missing the point going on with that line hoping it means something. Paramount and Abrams have taken all that is known about Trek and thrown it out the window. As a fan of TNG, DS9 etc you will never see anything added to it. They have taken Trek down the road of "Star Wars". Let me guess STXII will be the "Empire Strikes Back" theme? As fans of Trek, following all the series with regards to stories has been ruined by the "time travel" reset movie that Abrams put out.
And if you don't believe in parallel universes then you have been ignoring Star Trek since at least season 2 of TOS. Every series has episodes on parallel timelines. Mirror Mirror, Yesterday's Enterprise, Parallels, All Good Things, the annual Mirror Universe episodes in DS9(I think there were 6, but I could be wrong), Voyager had Year of Hell, and did the same thing Star Trek did in their final episode(have someone come back in time to change history), I'm sorry but you're unablity to believe in parallel universes doesn't make them not exist in Star Trek. They absolutely do.
Last but not least the canon argument. TOS couldn't even follow it's own canon. There are many things in TOS that you can't explain through canon. They destroy a cloaked ship in BoT then comes season 3 and they find out that the Romulan's recently discovered how to cloak their ships like they never knew about it. Not to mention the multiple times they messed up what year it was(anywhere from the 21st to 29th centuries off the top of my head) And it's not like the writers in the TNG era discounted canon whenever they felt like it. They did, atleast they made sure the century was right. That's about the only thing they kept canon most of the time.

I'm not missing the point, I'm taking a giant steaming dump on it because I think it's asinine in the extreme.
So again, why are you needing to define me as one of your haters? Are you threatened by anyone else who might have had even the slightest of differences of opinion on this movie from your own?
It wasn't a rant, nor am I upset.Sigh! It is quite clear you are upset at me pointing out that all the Trek up to this point has now been erased. "Oh I still have my DVDs"...blah blah blah. Sorry buddy but the Trek that is on those DVDs is now dead. Expect NOTHING to be added to it...

Taking Trek backwards was not the way to go.
No. The timeline is different. There will be no Cage and therefore no Menagerie. There will be no Balance of Terror. No Amok Time. There will also be no Spock's Brain. Not because of the timeline, but because of the suck.We are not subjected to rehashing TOS episode ideas now????
You can haz it?Sad.
There will be no more to add to Citizen Kane and Friends either...might as well box that up too. I wasn't aware that one could only watch something and enjoy it only if it's continuity was on going. You can now take your Trek DVDs and box them in the attic seeing how there will be no more stories to add to it.

There are still books being written about the old series and characters - allllll of them, I think. Official books authorized by the folks who own the name Star Trek.
So. Nothing is out the window. No matter what Abrams or anybody else says. If TPTB determine that there's a market for it, it will continue to be produced. Yes, it's really that simple.
Why would you want it to be? I don't get it. There's room for just about everybody in the Trek media world, so why not just live and let live?
