Spock and Uhura [SPOILERS]

agreed. if ever there were two characters best suited to a TOS romance of the sort I would love, it'd be Spock and Uhura.

I heard Gene Roddenberry wanted it as well in TOS, but was denied by the suits.

don't worry, I love your posts and your sensibility about Spock and Uhura. you should write some fanfic! :D

Well,Thank you so much Indranee :) I was going on and on...

And I loved Leonard Nimoy's response when asked about the relationship...he said he was jealous :)

I truly loved the entire movie, but this storyline just captured me from the moment I sensed there might be something going on!!!

You know, as much as I thought about those 2 after I saw the movie the first time, I definitely should "try" to write some fanfic...eventhough I say Spock and Uhura do not necessarily have to look like Zoe and Zachary, I will be thinking of them as I am writing about their after long day of work scrabble contests and mental duels they will each wage against other male and females intent on breaking up their happy union;)

oh, I can see that ;)

I guess my interest (and confusion) came from the fact that I've always heard that it was hard for Amanda to conceive and that Spock came about after considerable medical help. I don't exactly remember where I read that though. maybe one of the novels? was it maybe GR's novelization of TMP? not sure.

It was discussed in the book "The Making of Star Trek" by Stephen E. Whitfield (which was written in 1968).

No fanfic holds any water when it comes to this story.

The turbolift scene sold it for me. I liked it that Uhura accepted Spock on his own terms, without pressing him to show more emotion than he was capable of. "What do you need?"

It's almost a shame that Nichelle Nichols never got to play a scene like that . . . .

Yeah, this is Uhura as she always should have been - not just the Spock relationship, but the skills, the knowledge.

I love the scene at the ship assignments where Uhura's railing on Spock for putting her on the Farragut and she just finishes the conversation with "No, I'm assigned to the Enterprise" - perfect!

I just gawked after that scene. The turbolift produced more gawking and bewildered smiling. I liked the relationship a lot.

It was also novelized by A.C. Crispin's Sarek, where it is discussed briefly.

Me as well for those exact reasons and I never knew that GR wanted them to have a relationship. Can someone provide a source? I have a Trekkie friend who hated it... though I think what he actually hated was the Nokia "ad" though I've since learned they helped design the communicators so I think that gets them a pass here...

Hello all,

I would like to see a little drama for them though:) perhaps instead of T'Pring, bring on board a charming ambassador who falls in love with Uhura, since Spock doesn't have a firm handle on his emotions, lets see some jealousy...insecurity...confusion and anger...and let's see Uhura work out a solution to bring her man back to reality!!!

Oh, I write so much...I have no sci fi friends so I am going overboard:)

I love most of your ideas but I've been saying to myself that one of the ways they could ruin Spock/Uhura is by creating a triangle. I was thinking more of Kirk, but I think that any nod in that direction could come off as too heavy handed. If it were a series, it might be different. I wouldn't want the subtle elegance of Spock/Uhura tarnished (which doesn't mean I don't think we should see them in "private" moments!). :techman:

The triangle thing is noteworthy, because the official movie poster right now has those three on it, and nobody else. It makes me wonder, along with the fact that Kirk was so interested in her.

I hope not. That would ruin so many delicate balances I can't even count! :(

I tend to think that the poster included Uhura in order to appeal to the female audience as well as a male audience. The more sectors of the audience a movie is designed to do well with, the better the chance for success, and the bigger the budget. The four sectors are: 1) Males under 25 (yes, the most crucial one, unfortunately); females under 25, older males, older females.

oh no, no triangles please. they all turn horrifically bad on screen. written, they're usually much better.

Oh goodness!! I responded about the "Triangles" on the other thread...now my comments are going to leave folks scrathing their head:)

Thank you for your welcome SeniorSleuth!!!

I really don't want a triangle, definitely not with Kirk involved, but I was just thinking of other scenarios for Uhura and Spock to be embroiled in...just to have a sub plot running through the movie to keep them active and a couple...I don't want lingering looks or Uhura always being left behind while the men go exploring... I want Spock and Uhura to have a substantive relationship...nothing major to take the audience away from the main plot...but I don't want them to have a relationship that is understood but never henceforth mentioned ...this first movie for me set the bar high and I want them to keep going forward:)

Uhura is a good learner...perhaps Spock can teach her the Vulcan Death Grip ...you know just a cute unconventional lovers thing...then have Spock become exasperated( yet another emotion) when Uhura goes around immobilizing half the male crew for no other reason than she can....Now talk about being let out an air lock and sent to an Ice Planet I better say that I am just joking and sign off for the evening:)

Now that I am on the right thread...TTYAL!!!!:)

Kirk has ADD when it come to the ladies. ;)
